Horatio was on the broad rock above the high tide line. He moved so slowly that from a distance Prince Freddie thought he was just a stone.

He was old. Older than Freddie had quite appreciated the last time. His shell had the look of something that had weathered considerable amounts of weather. Not damaged by it. Just marked by it, the way old boats are marked by water. He stood in the middle of a large flat rock. He had an expression of calm and absolute attention. Freddie had learned to recognise this in very few people and animals. It was the look of someone doing the thing they are specifically for.

On the rock around him were objects. A grouping of white pebbles in one area. A small pile of sea glass in three colours. Some mussel shells with their dark blue-black surfaces. Driftwood sticks of various lengths. Horatio had organised them by size.

“Horatio,” Prince Freddie said calmly.

“Freddie,” Horatio said. “I am making a picture. I could use another pair of eyes at ground level.”

Freddie stepped onto the rock. “What kind of picture?”

“I’ll know when it’s done,” Horatio said. “I need a piece of green sea glass. Not pale green. Darker. The colour of the deep water on a clear day.”

Freddie went to find it.

This was the beginning of an arrangement that took most of the afternoon. Horatio described what he needed. Freddie found it. The finding took time. A piece of driftwood had the right length but the wrong weight. Horatio declined it.

The dark sea glass went in the upper part of the arrangement, which was broader than the lower part. Around it went white pebbles and then the mussel shells, laid flat, in a curving line. The driftwood sticks went at the lower edge, a series of horizontals at slightly different lengths. Some amber-brown sea glass filled a section to the right that Freddie couldn’t see well from where he was standing.

Late in the afternoon, the image was almost done. The blue-black of the mussel shells. The dark green glass. The white pebbles. The long flat driftwood at the lower edge.

He thought of the sandcastles from earlier that summer.

Horatio placed one final piece: a small pale shell, spiral, right of centre. Then he stepped back, as much as turtles step back, and considered what was on the rock.

Freddie considered it with him, his crown tilted low at ground level.

“Is it done?” Freddie said.

“Yes,” Horatio said.

They sat with it for a while. The afternoon sun was going at the angle that caught the mussel shells and made the blue-black gleam. The green sea glass went its colour of deep water. The white pebbles held their colour in the late light.

The broad rock was above the high tide line, where the pattern of stone and glass would hold steady through the seasons. “Good work,” Horatio said.

“Good picture,” Freddie said.

Horatio began the slow process of leaving. With turtles this involves first deciding to leave. Then beginning to move in the relevant direction. Then continuing in that direction for some time. He went toward the water. He moved in the unhurried manner of someone who has always done so. He expects to continue.

Freddie watched him go. Then he looked once more at the picture on the rock. From where he stood he still couldn’t quite tell what it was. He had the feeling that from above, from the perspective of a large bird or a cloud, it would be perfectly clear.

He walked home in the early evening. He went along the shore where the sand was still warm.

The cottage was exactly as he had left it. His human was in the kitchen. Freddie ate. He went to bed.

He circled once, twice, three times. Lay down on his side. His legs were loose. He was still.

On the rock, the picture waited. The light was fading.

His human was reading in the cottage, fingers wrapped around a warm cup.

Prince Freddie stepped onto the beach, his crown catching the morning light.

The sand was the wrong colour. Not completely wrong. Not unrecognisably wrong. But off in the way that a familiar song played in the wrong key is off. It was recognisable, and wrong, and impossible to ignore once heard. The sand was the colour of sea. A flat grey-green that belonged further out. And the sea, as far as he could see, was the colour of sand. A warm pale beige that made it look drinkable, which it was not.

He turned around. The cottage walls, which were white, were a deep and emphatic terracotta. Señora Benilde’s garden (green and lavender and various, always) was entirely mauve from end to end. The lighthouse was purple.

Freddie walked to the middle of the beach, his short legs moving steadily across the changed sand. He sat down and looked at everything for a while.

“I know,” said a voice from somewhere near his feet.

He looked down. Beside him, sitting on the sand, was a young spirit. She was about the height of a large stone. A flat wooden case was open across her knees. The case contained vials in all colours. They were carefully labelled. Several were open. She was going through them in order.

“A vial dropped,” she said. “And then I was trying to catch it. Another one dropped. And then...” She gestured at the sea.

“The sea,” Freddie said.

“And the sand,” she said. “And the lighthouse, which I still don’t understand. I think some of the orange got into the blue when I was reaching, and orange and blue make... I didn’t expect it to be quite so much.”

“It’s something,” Freddie said.

She looked up. “Do you want to help me understand it?”

“Yes,” Freddie said, which was straightforward, because he lived here.

They began with the easy ones. The white cottage walls were simple to find in the case. A vial with a clean label. The spirit opened it carefully. The walls went white again. This was a relief. Señora Benilde’s garden took two vials. The lavender needed to be separated from the rest of the green. They found them both. The garden settled back into itself within a few minutes. The lighthouse required some debate. The spirit’s records showed it as white. Freddie observed that the lighthouse had always been white with a red-painted band at mid-height. She had not known about the band. They found a red vial. The tower became correct. This satisfied them both.

Then they came to the sea.

“Blue,” the spirit said. She held up a large vial.

“Mostly,” Freddie said.

She looked at him.

“The sea is blue today,” he said. “But it’s green on the days when the wind comes from the west. The wind moves the water differently. In the morning before the sun is fully up it’s grey. Almost silver. For about four minutes at sunrise it goes orange. You can only see this if you’re on the beach early enough. In certain autumn weather it goes purple at the edges. At night it’s black. Except where the moon catches it. Where it’s the colour of that.” He nodded at a vial in the far corner of the case. “Silver, but moving.”

Freddie’s tail had slowed, watching. It nearly stilled.

The spirit stared at the vial in her hand.

“My record says blue,” she said.

“I have one vial for the sea. There is one label. The label says blue.”

“How large is the vial?”

She held it up. It was considerably larger than any of the others.

The spirit looked at the vial. She looked at the pale beige sea. She looked at Freddie.

She opened the large vial. She tipped it carefully. The sea went blue. But not a simple blue. It was a blue that had grey in it and green in it. It had the memory of this morning’s orange. It had the anticipation of the silver it would become at midnight.

The spirit closed the vial and made a note in a small book she produced from somewhere. She wrote for a moment and then stopped and looked at what she had written.

“It’s going to be a long entry,” she said.

“The sea usually is,” Freddie said.

She made one more note. She closed the book. She packed the case with care. Each vial went back in its place. She was thorough about it. When she was done she stood. She gave the beach a long look. She was checking her work. The sand was the colour of sand. The sea was the colour of the sea. The lighthouse was white with its red band.

“Better,” she said.

“Better,” Freddie said.

She left in the way spirits leave things. All at once, without a particular moment of departure. The beach was simply her and then not.

Freddie walked home as the afternoon came into its full heat. The sea followed him, changing the light at every step. He came through the cottage door into the shade. The old beams and the plaster walls held the cool of the morning. His crown rested evenly on his head.

His human was reading on the sofa. Freddie went to the water bowl. He went to the bed.

He circled once, twice, three times. He lay down with his nose along his front paws. He faced toward the window and the sea.

Prince Freddie had made a promise at the lighthouse.

He had made it some months ago, sitting alone in the lantern room at the top. He was reading the keeper’s notebook by the light of the beam. The keeper had not been there. Only the jacket on the chair. The cold thermos. The log of every night recorded in the same steady hand. But the notebook had said something that stayed with Freddie. The light does not know which night it will be needed. This is why it comes on every night. He had decided, that evening, that on the full moon he would come back. He would sit in that room and keep watch.

Freddie did not know if it still worked. That was not the point.

He set out in the late afternoon, when the moon was already visible in the pale sky. She was patient and round. She was waiting for her turn. The path up the cliff was familiar. The rosemary was low along the track. The sea appeared through gaps in the rock as he climbed. The lighthouse grew from a white point to a proper structure with its lantern room dark at this hour.

He settled at the base of the lighthouse wall. The stone held the warmth of the afternoon. The sun was finishing. The sea went from gold to copper to the deep moving grey of a winter evening. Then the moon took over. She laid a long bright road from the horizon to the shore.

Freddie watched.

The lights of boats moved across the water in their ordinary patterns. Fishing boats were working close in. A cargo vessel was far out, making south. A smaller lamp further along the coast was probably a tender from the marina.

Then, around midnight, something changed.

There was a light far out, further than the fishing boats. It was taking its time. It moved slowly. It paused and adjusted its heading. Not lost exactly. More like a ship choosing its approach carefully. Like what you do when you are not in a hurry to arrive. Nobody looking casually at the sea would have noticed. But Freddie had been watching for four hours. He saw it.

He did not know its story. He thought his companionable thoughts.

He thought about the harbour entrance, which he knew well. He thought about the gap between the breakwaters and the particular line of the channel. He thought about the lighthouse beam sweeping its regular arc. He thought about the water being deep enough and the wind being reasonable. He thought about the town at the bottom of the hill. He thought about arriving somewhere after a long time at sea. He held all of this in his mind. He faced the distant light for the rest of the night.

It was the longest he had sat still since he was a very young dog. His legs stiffened in the cold. His crown caught the moonlight. It held it.

At some point between two and three in the morning, the distant light began to move with more purpose. He watched it for an hour to be sure. It was resolving. Finding something, or deciding something, or simply the difficulty passing the way difficulties sometimes do. By four it was moving steadily. By five it was making for the harbour.

Freddie watched it come in.

Not quickly. A careful approach. The lights picked out the channel markers one by one. The ship grew larger as it drew closer. It worked the entrance between the breakwaters in the grey-blue of early morning. He could hear the engines now. They were low and steady. The hull was dark. Containers were stacked amidships. A small bridge light. It passed into the harbour without incident. The morning swallowed it. That was all.

Freddie stood. His joints protested slightly. He turned for home.

The path down the cliff was cooler than the ascent. The air carried the dampness of before-dawn. He passed through the village. The square was empty. The fountain was quiet. Outside Tiempo Honesto, the shutters were still closed. The clock inside would be ticking toward its natural pause.

The lavender along Señora Benilde’s path met him before he reached the gate. It was soft and certain in the morning air. It was the way it always was at this particular hour. This was true regardless of the season. He stopped and stood in it for a moment.

Then he went inside.

His human was still asleep. The room was dark. The quality of their breathing was even and deep. Freddie moved quietly to the bed. He hopped up. His legs were very tired now. He looked at the window for a moment. The light was coming slowly. The roofline was catching the first colour of the day.

He circled once, twice, three times. He lay down. His legs were heavy from the long cold watch, too heavy to find it interesting. The window was pale now, the day coming up behind it.

In the harbour below the village, a cargo ship sat at its berth. The early light was around it. Lines were secure. Engines were quiet.

The dune had been there for as long as Prince Freddie could remember.

It was the old one, up past the high tide line. The beach grass grew in thick clumps there. The sand had hardened to something almost like ground. He had passed it on his morning patrol so many times he had stopped noticing it.

This morning, he stepped onto it and it was not there.

Not entirely. The outer crust held for one step. Then the ground made a decision. Freddie went with it. He slid in a long smooth descent. The sand parted around him like water. His short legs pedalled briefly and uselessly against nothing. His crown tilted and then tilted further, until he stopped.

He sat up. His crown was sideways. He adjusted it.

He was in a room. The ceiling was arched. The walls were sand packed firm. The floor was smooth dark stone. Shelves ran floor to ceiling. On them were objects. There were bottles and jars and small chests. There were carefully folded nets and things wrapped in oilcloth. Some things were too large to wrap and others too small to see clearly from where he was sitting. Every object had a small card beside it. Each card was hand-lettered.

In the centre of the room, behind a table that appeared to be made from a single piece of driftwood, sat Francisco.

Freddie had heard of Francisco the Octopus for some time. He came from conversations on the beach and a passing mention at the harbour. Freddie had the impression of someone important in the way that librarians are important. Francisco was essential, largely invisible, deeply engaged with something that most people did not think about. He was the colour of warm sandstone. He had eight arms. Each arm was doing something different. All of it was useful. One held a magnifying glass, one made a note, one reshelved a bottle, one adjusted his glasses. He should not technically have needed them but wore them anyway. He sat behind his table with the air of someone interrupted while very busy. He was deciding how to feel about it.

“You came through the ceiling,” Francisco said.

“I did,” Freddie agreed. “I apologise.”

“The dune needed maintenance,” Francisco said, and made a note of something. “It has needed it for three years. You are not the first thing to come through, but you are the largest in recent memory.”

Freddie looked around the room. “What is this place?”

“Everything the sea has ever brought to this shore,” Francisco said. “Or its record. Some objects are here. For others, we hold the catalogue entry only. We have been collecting since the shore was this shore. That is a considerable time.” He rose from behind the table. He gestured at the shelves. “Would you like to see?”

Freddie followed him along the first wall.

The cards were written in several languages and several hands. This meant the collection had been catalogued by different keepers. Francisco had inherited something already vast. He pointed out objects without stopping.

A blue bottle from a northern country. It was sealed with red wax. A fishing float in orange glass from before the blown-glass era. A carved wooden horse no longer than Freddie’s paw. It was painted red. The paint was worn to nothing on one side. A chart, folded many times, of a coast that had since shifted entirely. A boot.

“We have extensive boots,” Francisco said. “The sea is very consistent about boots.”

They turned a corner Freddie had not noticed was there. He stopped.

On a shelf at eye level stood a small velvet stand. It held no pearl, only a hand-lettered card, the way the library keeps the record of a thing the sea has carried home. The card read: Pearl of Granada. Carried ashore, traded back to the sea by a collector for a gift of shells. Now in the underwater castle, where the fish dream of it still. Provenance: see cross-reference, P. Seagull.

“Pedro,” Freddie said. His tail gave a slow sway.

He had been there the night it happened. The nest of bottle caps and silver foil sat by the lighthouse. Captain Coral had gathered fine shells in exchange, spirals of purple and fans of pink. Pedro had turned them over and looked very pleased, certain he had the better end of it.

“You know each other,” Francisco said, without surprise.

“Since the night he traded it back,” Freddie said. “He liked the shells better. So did the fish.”

“So the record says,” Francisco said. “A fair exchange. It is noted, with the cross-reference.”

Freddie looked at the empty stand a moment, glad the pearl was back where it was needed.

Further along, on a lower shelf, was a glass bottle with a cork, containing a rolled piece of paper. The card read: Message, origin unknown. Contents: one page. Language: Portuguese, archaic form. Approximate age: see notes. Condition: preserved.

“Someone will claim it,” Francisco said, “or they won’t. Either way it is kept.”

Freddie recognised the message bottle on the lower shelf.

They came back to the table. Freddie sat down on the stone floor. It was cool and pleasant after the warmth of the beach above.

“How do I get out?” he said.

“There is a passage,” Francisco said. He pointed to an archway at the far end of the room. Freddie had taken it for another shelf arrangement. “It comes out above the tide line, behind the marram grass. Mind the last step. It is taller than you.”

“Gracias,” Freddie said.

“The dune will reseal in a few days,” Francisco said. He sat back behind his table. “Come through the passage next time, if you want to visit. I can show you the cartography section. We have some extraordinary things.”

Freddie went through the archway. The passage was cool. It smelled of deep stone and the particular clean dry smell of old paper. It went up at a steady angle for longer than he expected. The last step was indeed tall. He came out into the late afternoon. He had a small amount of sand in his ear and a very full head.

The beach was going gold. The air above the tide line had that warm softness. The light was long and unhurried. The day was exhaling. Freddie stood in it for a moment with his eyes half-closed.

He walked home along the beach path.

His human was in the garden when he arrived. They were doing something peaceful with the tomato plants. They looked up. They appeared to notice he had a great deal of sand in various places. They decided not to ask. Freddie ate his supper with the appetite of someone underground longer than expected.

He went to the bed. He circled once, twice, three times. He moved slow and deliberate. Then he lay down flat on his back. He did this sometimes. His paws were up. His belly faced the ceiling. It was cooler than the rest of him. Within a few breaths he was warm.

Below the dune, in the room, Francisco made a note. His handwriting was careful. It read: One corgi. Crown. Patron status: confirmed.

Then he went back to work. Three arms catalogued. The fourth cleaned his glasses. The fifth held his place in a book. He had been reading between tasks.

The morning was missing something.

Prince Freddie could not, at first, say what. The sky was the right colour for this hour: the pale grey-blue of early light, not yet committed to anything. The sea was behaving correctly. The shore was as it always was, the tide about where he expected it, the sand unmarked except by the night’s small events.

Then he looked out across the water and understood.

There was a cloud on the sea.

Not above the sea, where clouds live and work. On it. Sitting flat on the surface about two hundred metres from the shore. She was very still and very low. A soft white mass resting on the water like something that had landed. She had decided not to get up again.

Freddie waded in to his knees, which was as far as he was going without a specific reason to go further.

“Hello,” he said.

A pause.

“Hello,” said the cloud. Her voice was the sound of fog, which is to say it was soft and all directions at once.

“Are you supposed to be out here?”

Another pause. Longer.

“I’m supposed to be up there,” she said. “This is my first morning. I’m responsible for the eastern light. You’re supposed to come in from the east at the right height. You catch the sun and move with it as it rises. I know how to do it. I’ve been trained.” A small silence. “I just came down here instead.”

Freddie considered this. “Because?”

“It’s very high,” the cloud said. “And very visible. Everyone can see the morning clouds. I didn’t expect that.”

Freddie waded back to dry sand and sat down, facing her. The eastern sky was beginning to lighten.

He had been sitting for some minutes when a larger shape appeared overhead. It descended in a thoughtful spiral. Nimbus Junior was a cloud of considerable experience. He had somewhat less considerable confidence than you might expect. He had spent his early years as the most anxious cloud on the coast. Over time, he learned that the coast got its weather whether he worried about it or not. He landed, if that was the right word, beside Freddie. He regarded the young cloud on the water.

“First shift?” he said.

“Yes,” the young cloud said.

“Eastern light?”

“Yes.”

Nimbus Junior was quiet for a moment. “I came down the same way,” he said. “My first December storm. I was supposed to cover the whole northern headland. I ended up in someone’s garden for two hours.”

“Did it help?” the young cloud said. “Coming down?”

“No,” Nimbus Junior said cheerfully. “I still had to go back up. But I understood something while I was down there. Do you want to know?”

“Yes.”

“The storm happened anyway. I was in someone’s garden. The storm happened up above me. It was all fine. The thing you’re wondering about is too large to change because you’re wondering. The morning is going to occur. The only question is whether you’re in it.”

The young cloud was quiet.

Freddie watched the eastern sky. The light was building without her. A pale gold beginning. The sun worked its way up behind the horizon. The first thin edge of it was showing.

“What does it feel like?” the young cloud said. “Being high up.”

“Like the first time every time,” Nimbus Junior said. “I’ve been doing this for years. It still feels like the first time when you go up.” He paused. “But the first time is also the most real time. You’ll have that this morning. You won’t have it again.”

The young cloud rose, slowly, from the surface of the water. She went up in the way clouds go up when they mean to. Not quickly. But with the kind of intention that has no question in it.

At the right height she stopped. She turned, or did what clouds do instead of turning. She caught the light.

The beach changed.

Not dramatically. But the quality of the morning shifted when the light came through cloud rather than clear sky. It was softer and more distributed. The shadows were less sharp. Everything had the particular gentleness of an early morning working at full capacity. The sand looked clean. The sea went a light grey-green. The tops of the village buildings caught something pink. It would be gone in ten minutes.

Nimbus Junior took this in.

He said nothing. He did not need to.

Freddie walked home through the early morning. The changed light moved with him. The salt air from the beach carried with it the sense of something new. The yoga man was at his patch of dry sand. He was beginning his practice. The sea ahead caught the new light in an extraordinary way. The village was starting. A shutter. A smell of coffee. A cat on a wall taking stock.

He went in through the cottage gate. His human was just waking, stirring under the covers. Freddie’s crown tilted gently as he watched them stretch. He ate, quietly, and circled toward the bed. Once, twice, three times. His small legs folded beneath him. He lowered his chin to rest on the cool covers. His tail curled around his side. The changed light from the window moved across his fur.

Above the coast, the young cloud held the light steady through the dawn.

The harbour at three fifteen was the best version of itself.

The fishing boats were in. The nets were spread and drying. The café had put its chairs on the outside tables and gone quiet. The square above the beach was empty except for a cat conducting a thorough investigation of the fountain’s shadow. Three pigeons had decided the arrangement was acceptable. The whole place had exhaled. This happens when everyone inside agrees to stop for an hour and means it.

Prince Freddie liked the siesta harbour. He had got into the habit of walking down when his afternoon patrol brought him that way. The light was good. The heat had reached its full weight. There was nothing that urgently required a corgi.

Tiempo Honesto had its door open. This meant Señor Tiempo was in and between customers. At three fifteen, that placed him there for the rest of the afternoon. Freddie went in.

Señor Tiempo was at his workbench with a clock Freddie had not seen before. It was about the size of a small radio. It was brass-cased with a cream dial and plain numerals. It had arrived that morning, Señor Tiempo said. It had no name attached and no note. It was left outside the door before he had opened the shutters.

“Left for repair?” Freddie said.

“That’s the thing,” Señor Tiempo said. “It doesn’t need repair.”

Freddie looked at the clock. It was ticking steadily. The second hand was moving. But to the left.

He looked at it for a long moment.

“It runs backwards,” he said.

“Perfectly,” Señor Tiempo said. His tone was that of a clockmaker confronting something that broke all his instruments. It did nothing technically wrong. “The mechanism is correct. The spring is properly wound. Every gear is engaged as it should be. It is correctly incorrect. I have been sitting here for four hours. I cannot find a flaw.”

Freddie sat down beside the workbench. The clock ticked on to the left, past twelve, down through eleven, ten, nine, with complete composure.

“Why would someone want a clock that runs backwards?” he said.

“I have been asking myself this,” Señor Tiempo said. He picked up his coffee. It had been cold for some time. He set the clock on the edge of the workbench. They could each see it without craning. The afternoon sun was moving around to the west. The light came through the shop window at an angle. It caught its brass case and held it.

They sat with it for a while.

“There is another possibility,” Señor Tiempo said. “The person who made this was very good. They were also very strange. They did not feel they needed to explain themselves.”

Freddie’s tail moved once. “Those are often the best clocks.”

“This is true,” Señor Tiempo said. They were quiet again. The clock ticked steadily backward through the afternoon.

At some point a woman came in asking about a battery replacement. Señor Tiempo attended to her. Freddie watched the dial. The woman left. The shop was quiet again. The backwards clock had passed nine o’clock. It was working its way toward eight with no intention of stopping or explaining itself.

“What will you do with it?” Freddie said.

“Keep it,” Señor Tiempo said, without hesitation. “Someone will come for it. Or they won’t and it will stay. Either way, I would like to keep watching it. I have had sixty years of clocks that go the same direction. I find I am not tired of seeing one go the other way.”

He set it on the shelf above the workbench. It was between a carriage clock and a small barometer. It looked completely ordinary there. It ticked in the company of things that told time differently. Its second hand swung left with great dignity.

Freddie left as the harbour was coming back to life. Chairs were being put down outside the café. A man wheeled a bicycle. The boats’ rigging was beginning to chime as the sea breeze picked up. He walked home along the high path above the beach. He could see the full sweep of the coast. The lighthouse was at one end and the fishing boats at the other. The water was that particular flat blue of late afternoon in the good season.

The cottage was at the end of the path. His human’s bicycle was against the wall. The kitchen window was open. Freddie went in. He drank a long drink of water. He went to the bed.

He circled once, twice, three times. Lay down with his back against the warmth of the wall. One ear folded forward. One folded back. His breathing slowed almost immediately.

In the harbour, in Tiempo Honesto, a small brass clock ticked backward. It had passed seven o’clock. It was making its way toward six. It would reach six in exactly sixty minutes.

The fisherman was there.

Prince Freddie had not been certain he would be. He had come to the western end of the beach on purpose. This was different from the first time, when he had simply stopped. Coming on purpose meant something was expected. He was not sure expectations were the right approach to flat rocks and patient men. Walking down the shore, he had told himself that he was simply doing his patrol. The rock was on the route.

This was true enough.

The fisherman had his rod in the water and his thermos at his side and his jacket collar up against the morning. He did not turn when Freddie’s paws came across the rock. He moved his hand once, a small gesture, the kind that means: I heard you, sit down.

Freddie sat down.

The sea was doing what it always did. It moved toward the shore and withdrew. It had before they were born and would after. It was patient and indifferent and somehow, this morning, exactly right. A gannet worked the water fifty metres out. It folded and dropped with precision. The boats in the harbour were already out. Their engines were faint and southward.

They had been sitting for perhaps twenty minutes when they heard the other boat.

A small one, rowing, came from around the headland with unhurried progress. The man at the oars was broad and content with his morning. He had a tin under the seat. It contained two coffees. He pulled up alongside the flat rock. He handed one across without ceremony. He nodded at Freddie in the way of someone being introduced to a regular arrangement they had already heard about.

“Mateo,” the fisherman said.

“I know,” Freddie said.

Mateo pulled his boat up to a comfortable angle. He propped his oars and opened his own coffee. He appeared to have no programme for the morning except this. It seemed to Freddie like extremely good planning.

The three of them sat while the sun got properly up. Mateo was the kind of person who did not need to fill a silence. This made him good company. He watched the water with the particular attention of someone who had spent a long time looking at it. He still found it interesting. Now and then he and the fisherman said something. They spoke in the economical manner of people who have known each other long enough that most things do not need saying.

Freddie’s tail moved in a slow arc.

He was thinking about the first time. He had come then by accident and stayed.

The line moved.

The fisherman stood and held it differently. It was the same modest conversation with the sea as before. He drew it in carefully.

A fish, similar in size to the last one. Freddie suspected it might be the same fish. He kept this observation to himself. The fisherman held it a moment. Looked at it without triumph. Lowered it to the water and held it there until it swam.

Mateo watched this without comment. It was clearly not new to him.

“Hasta pronto,” the fisherman said, not quite to the fish and not quite to Freddie. The way he had said it to Freddie at the end of the first morning.

Mateo began to think about rowing home. He took his time about it. He and the fisherman exchanged a few words. Their manner suggested the next visit was not arranged. It would happen anyway. Mateo rowed off around the headland. He was unhurried. The oars were steady.

Freddie stood to go. The rock was warm under his paws now, the morning properly under way.

“Hasta pronto,” the fisherman said, without turning.

“Hasta pronto,” Freddie said.

He walked home along the shore in the full morning light. The beach was coming to life. The yoga man was folding his mat at the top of the sand. He was ready for his swim. Children at the far end with a ball. Two women with coffee walking along the waterline. The village above it was beginning its own day. Its shutters were opening. Its smells of bread and coffee filled the air. The particular warmth of stone was already heating.

Freddie reached the cottage garden and stopped at the gate for a moment. The spare cup was back in the fisherman’s bag, for next time.

His human was inside, already at something in the kitchen. Freddie went in and ate. He went to the bed. He moved like someone who had completed a full morning. He was comfortable with how it went.

He circled once, twice, three times. Lay down slowly on his side. His front paws tucked. The afternoon was ahead. His eyes went heavy in the way of a good tiredness. His human’s hand came to rest on him. He had not finished settling. The hand was already there, warm and still.

Prince Freddie had a finely tuned sense of time. The light shifted from gold to copper to the deep orange that meant the sun was preparing to leave. The tide pools began to cool at a certain hour. The first star arrived at an exact moment, usually just to the left of the old lighthouse.

This evening, something was different.

Freddie stopped on the shore and looked west. The sun was still there. Not setting. Not moving toward the horizon. She hung above the water like a visitor considering where to sit.

The beach held its amber colour. It should have been shifting to grey and silver. Instead the light lingered. The shadows stretched longer than usual. The tide pool creatures waited under their rocks because they had expected darkness.

Freddie’s ears went forward.

He walked to the far end of the beach, past the southern rock where the fisherman sometimes sat. He passed the place where Pedro had built his new nest in the cliff grass. The sun seemed to sink a little as he watched, then stopped. She had tried to set and then thought better of it.

“Buenas tardes,” Freddie said softly.

The sun said nothing, which was fair, because she was a very large star and he was a corgi. But Freddie had spoken to enough extraordinary things to know that being heard and being said were not always the same transaction.

“You’ve missed the signal,” he said. “The colours are all wrong. The tide pools have been waiting.”

Something shifted. The light changed quality, slightly, the way it does in the last moment before a decision is made.

Freddie sat down on the warm sand. He was quite good at waiting.

“I was watching the boats,” the sun said finally. The light softened as she spoke. “The way they move. The small ones especially. One of them had a blue sail. I’ve seen it every evening for years. I never quite noticed the blue properly before.”

Freddie’s tail moved once. He understood this. He had once spent an entire morning watching the way foam moved across a flat rock and had not meant to at all.

“The difficulty,” he said, “is that the moon is waiting.”

A pause.

“She’s very patient,” Freddie added, “but she has been standing at the edge of the sky since half past seven. She has nowhere to go. The stars are also waiting. About forty of them, by my count, on the eastern side. They have their places arranged already. They can’t come out while you’re still here.”

The light shifted again, and then was still.

“And the tide pools,” Freddie continued, “do something quite particular in proper darkness. The small creatures come out. I’ve only seen it twice. It takes a very dark sky. You have been very bright this evening.”

The sun moved, finally. She descended steadily. The orange deepened into something extraordinary. Red and rose and the last warmth of the day went into the sand. It went into the stone walls of the village and the white sides of the boats in the harbour. It lasted longer than usual. Freddie stayed very still and watched.

Then she was gone. The horizon held her colour for a moment, a thin warm line, and then that went too.

The stars came out. First one, to the left of the lighthouse, exactly where it always arrived. Then many. The moon appeared on the eastern horizon with an air of great patience finally rewarded, and rose without comment, casting the beach in silver.

From the tide pools came small sounds. Movement in the water. The creatures arriving for their particular part of the evening, unhurried now that the light had got itself sorted.

Freddie walked home along the shore. The sand was cool under his paws. It was the proper temperature for this hour. The air carried the wild rosemary that grew above the tide line. The village was lit in its usual evening way. The café was shuttered. A few windows were warm and yellow. In the botanical garden above the beach, the turtle pond was quiet and still. The passionfruit vine hung above it.

The cottage was at the end of the path. His human had left the small side lamp on. It cast a gold circle on the ceiling of the porch. Inside, Freddie ate his supper in the companionable dark of the kitchen. The window showed a sky that was now exactly the right depth of blue-black. His human came through, carrying tea, and settled into the armchair with a book.

Freddie’s crown tilted gently as he looked at them. Then he went to the bed. His human was already settled, a book closed on the covers beside them.

Freddie circled once, twice, three times. On the third circle he sat down squarely. His small legs folded beneath him, front then back. He lowered his chin until it found the cool covers. His tail curved around his side. The taste of salt air lingered on his fur.

The moon moved across the window. Above the harbour, the first star held its place.

January on the Spanish coast was a different beach.

Not a lesser one. Different. The tourists had gone. The volleyball nets were down. The café had reduced its hours. It kept to those times with more integrity than in summer. The beach had exhaled. In the absence of summer business, it had gone back to what it actually was. A long arc of sand between the sea and the hills. Old and unhurried. Getting on with things.

Prince Freddie liked it considerably.

He liked it in the particular way that he liked the harbour at three fifteen, or the fountain square just before dawn.

This morning his human had come with him.

This did not always happen. In summer, the beach was a shared thing, full of people and noise and the requirement to navigate. In January it was theirs, the two of them, walking at whatever pace felt right, with nobody to account to.

The sun was low, as it always was in January. It came in at a long angle that made everything cast a shadow three times its size. Freddie’s shadow looked like a dog of conventional leg length. He found that mildly interesting. The light at this angle changed the colour of the sand. It saturated it, made the gold more gold, the damp areas near the tide line a deep rich brown.

And then there were the sun-puddles.

He had known about these for years. They were a January secret. Like all the best January secrets, they required the lower sun. They required the angle of the shore. The specific way the cold kept the air still. Where the sun hit the dry sand directly, it went warm. Not beach-towel warm. Genuinely warm. Freddie had learned that if you pressed your belly to these patches the heat came up through your fur. It was like the warmest possible thing. You could lie there and feel the sun below you and the cool air above you simultaneously. That was an arrangement he would very much recommend.

He found the first one near the eastern end and pressed himself flat.

His human came past, glanced at him, and continued along the tide line. They walked barefoot, which Freddie had always found the correct way to walk on this beach in January. The sand near the water was cool and still damp from the last tide, and their footprints left clean, unhurried marks beside the foam.

His human had their own January business, which was shells.

The winter storms brought in different things. Summer had small smooth shells, worked over for the longest time. January had shells from further out and deeper down. They were less worn, their original shapes still visible. Ridged ones, and pointed ones, and ones with a pattern. The sea had not yet smoothed these away. His human knew which ones were good. The criteria were their own. Freddie did not fully understand them. He could tell that they existed. Some shells were picked up and held to the light and pocketed. Others were set back down with care. They were returned with the same attention used to pick them up.

Freddie nosed the ones that went back into the sand.

He found a second sun-puddle near the flat rock where the crab sometimes worked and pressed himself flat again. The cold of the air was clean and the warmth below him was generous and the whole arrangement was very satisfying.

His human moved slowly along the water’s edge. The light was best in these long angles. The long angles required patience. You had to stand still. You let the low sun find the shell’s surface at the right moment. This happened or it didn’t. If it didn’t, you waited or you moved on.

A pair of birds Freddie didn’t know the name of worked the waterline. They were unhurried and efficient. Up at the botanical garden above the beach the turtle family was making winter arrangements. They arranged around the pond. The passionfruit vine was bare and spare above the pergola in the January cold. The yoga man had been through earlier. His swim was longer in January because the beach was empty. There was no reason to hurry back.

Freddie pressed his belly into a third sun-puddle. It was the best of the three. He lay with his eyes half-open. He watched his human move along the shore.

The pocket was full now, or close to it. His human crouched at something near the water. They held it up. The light came through it or didn’t. Then it went into the pocket. That was the last one. They turned and came back up the beach toward where Freddie was lying.

They stopped beside him and crouched down. They put out a hand. He sniffed the shell they were holding. It was cold, and salt, and deep-water smell from further out. It had a quality of time he had no word for. It was different from the summer shells. Old in a different way. Further.

It went into the pocket.

They walked home together at a pace of two people not late. The path came up from the shore through the village. The fountain square was quiet. The shutters on most shops were still closed. Past Señora Benilde’s garden, the lavender was cut back but still there. It still exhaled its steady certainty into the cold air. The path held a small warmth underneath the cold. The afternoon had kept this back until the last of the light.

The cottage was at the end of the path. Inside, the old beams had kept the warmth since morning. They had that deep reliable quality of thick walls and good wood. His human put the shells from their pocket on the windowsill in the kitchen. They arranged them in a line without any order at all. Then they went to make something warm.

Freddie ate his supper. Then he went to the bedroom. The light was the quality of a January afternoon. It was pale and blue through the window. The bed was exactly right.

He circled once, twice, three times. Then he climbed onto the bed. It took a moment with his short legs. He settled in against the warmth already there from the morning. The sheets still held it. His chin found a fold in the cover. The rest of him arranged itself around the chin. His tail curled simply where it ended up.

Outside, the January beach continued. The light at its long angle across the sand. Where the sun hit it directly, the surface was warm.

Tia arrived at great speed. With Tia this didn’t always mean urgency. Most things arrived the same way.

She was the dog from the cottage past the lighthouse, long-legged, with ears that moved independently of each other. They appeared to be consulting separate committees.

“There is something in the cliff,” she said, and turned immediately to lead the way, because she was already quite confident he would come.

She was right. He followed.

The crack was beyond the headland, further along than Prince Freddie usually went. The cliff face met the shore at a complicated angle. The rock had split over a long time into a fissure about the width of a medium-sized dog. Tia went through it sideways, efficiently. Freddie turned sideways and went through. His crown tilted against the rock. He emerged into the dim space beyond.

It was a chamber. A high ceiling, wet walls that caught the light from a gap above, smooth dark stone. In the centre, a pool of water, connected to the sea by a submerged passage that Freddie could smell even before he saw it. The air was completely still. The sound from outside (the waves, the wind, the usual business of the coast) had gone.

On the far edge of the pool was a flat ledge of rock above the waterline. A seal pup lay there with its head on its flippers. It looked at them with the expression of someone waiting longer than expected.

Freddie went still. He put his nose down to the stone floor, then to the air above the pool, then to the damp edge of the passage. The scent of the open sea on its coat. And underneath it, milk.

“It has been fed,” Freddie said. “Not long ago.” He sat back on the stone. “Its mother is out fishing. This is where she leaves it.”

“What do we do?” Tia said.

“Nothing,” Freddie said. “It is exactly where it is supposed to be.”

Tia’s ears consulted their separate committees about this.

“You,” Freddie said, “go up the cliff path to where you can see the water beyond the headland. Watch for a dark head in the swell. When you see her, come back.”

Tia was already turning. “And you?”

“I stay here,” Freddie said.

She went back through the crack. Freddie heard her footsteps across the rock, quick and receding, and then nothing.

He sat down on the dry stone floor, a comfortable distance from the pup, and looked at it. It looked at him. Its eyes were dark and very round.

The chamber held still. A column of grey-white light from the gap above. Freddie could hear the movement of water in the passage below the pool.

The pup made a small sound. Not distress. Something more like comment.

“I know,” Freddie said.

Time passed.

Tia came back at speed, slightly out of breath.

“She is out past the rocks,” she said. “Coming this way.”

“Good,” Freddie said.

The pup lifted its head. It had known before either of them.

The pup moved to the edge of the ledge, slid into the pool, and was through the passage. A disturbance in the water. Then nothing.

Tia looked at the empty ledge.

“That’s it?” she said.

“That’s it,” Freddie said.

They came back through the crack. The light and sound of the coast came at once after the quiet.

“I found a good place,” Tia said.

“You did,” Freddie said.

They walked back along the base of the cliff together, the long way. The evening was good and neither was in a hurry. At the point where their routes divided, Tia peeled off toward the lighthouse. Her speed started before she had fully committed to the direction. This was simply how she moved through the world.

Freddie went to the cottage. He came through the garden gate and went inside.

His human had made bread. The kitchen was warm with it.

Freddie ate his supper and went to the bed. His legs were tired.

He circled once, twice, three times. Then he lay down onto his chest, front paws forward. His tail rested against the back of his human’s knee.

Along the coast, the cliff face opened onto a chamber. The tide breathed in and out. The ledge above the pool was empty, and would not be empty long.

His human was sorting through a basket of thread at the cottage table, colours spilling across the wood.

There was a flat rock near the eastern end of the beach. Prince Freddie stopped at it often on his afternoon patrol. His crown caught the afternoon light as he walked. His short legs moved steadily across the sand.

Today there was a crab on it.

A small one, dark-shelled, moving carefully around the rock’s surface with the methodical attention of someone doing fine work. On the rock, arranged in a curved line, were objects. A piece of sea glass in rose-pink. A smooth amber stone. A short length of blue rope. A curl of dried kelp gone pale gold. A chip of white shell. Another piece of sea glass in a dark green, almost black.

Freddie stopped.

The crab moved the amber stone a small distance left, then back. She left it where it had been. She did not find this unsatisfying. She moved on to the blue rope. She repositioned it slightly. She stepped back and considered.

Freddie sat down on the sand and watched. His tail began to move slowly, following the crab’s movements. When the rose-pink glass caught the light, his tail nearly stilled.

He watched for quite a long time. The crab had a system. She was working from one end to the other. The rose-pink glass she touched frequently. The curl of pale gold kelp she left alone.

At some point she became aware of him.

She did not scuttle. She stopped, regarded him sideways, and then, after a moment, returned to the blue rope.

“It’s good,” Freddie said.

“I know,” she said, which was not boasting. Just accurate.

“What’s it for?”

She paused. Not a long pause, but the kind that means the question is being taken seriously. “Nothing,” she said. “It’s just arranged.”

Freddie looked at the line of coloured things. The rose-pink and the amber sat together. Each became more itself. The two pieces of sea glass, one pale and one nearly black, asked something of each other. The distance between them held the amber stone and the blue rope. The pale gold kelp at the far end made the whole thing feel complete. He could not say why.

“Has anyone seen it?” he said.

“You have,” she said.

“Before me.”

“No one that I know of.”

Freddie thought about this.

“Do you always do this?” he said.

“When I find good pieces,” she said. “I find a lot of blue. Blue is common. The rose-pink is harder.” She moved the rose-pink piece again, a fraction. “When I find good rose-pink I keep it. I wait until I have the right place.”

“How long did you carry that?”

“Two weeks,” she said, without any suggestion that this was remarkable.

Freddie sat with this. He looked at the arrangement again, at the way each colour answered the colours beside it. The pale gold at the end caught the light and held it. He understood, in the way that you understand things without words, why she had carried the rose-pink for two weeks waiting for its place.

“I find good things on my patrol,” he said. “I don’t always know what to do with them.”

“You look at them,” the crab said.

She touched the pale kelp and did not move it. She stepped back and considered the arrangement.

The afternoon light was going at the angle that made the rock look briefly golden. The rose-pink glass caught it and went briefly extraordinary.

Freddie stood up. “It’s good,” he said again.

“I know,” she said again. Then she went to the edge of the rock. She descended into the sand below. She disappeared in the unhurried way of creatures at home in the thing they move into.

Freddie walked home along the shore. The flat rock was behind him. The air was sharp and continuous with the cool of the coming evening. He walked slowly, his short legs carrying him home.

The cottage was lit when he arrived. The side lamp was on, his human’s jacket on the chair by the door. Freddie ate, and went to the bed, and was quieter than usual.

He circled once, twice, three times. Curled close, nose tucked to his own chest, small and complete. His breathing slowed almost before he had finished settling.

Prince Freddie found Gilberto sitting perfectly still on the flat rock near the southern tide pools, and knew immediately that something was wrong.

Gilberto was a hermit crab Freddie had met before, on the morning he had found every shell on the beach plugged silent with sea glass. He was not a still creature. A creature of constant small adjustments: his shell, his claws, his sideways gait, his opinions. Freddie had never once seen him motionless.

“Gilberto.”

“Prince Freddie.” He did not move. “I have a problem. It is everyone’s problem. But I have been asked to solve it. So it is currently mine in particular.”

He explained it carefully, in the methodical way of someone who has sat alone with a problem long enough to organise it into sections. Eight crabs. All needing to move into the next size shell as they grew. The system worked on a chain. When a large enough shell arrived on the coast, the biggest crab moved in. Their old shell went to the next one down. This continued all the way to the smallest. Without something new and large entering the system, nobody could move at all.

No new shell had come in for six weeks.

“And the smallest,” Freddie said.

“Her name is Petra.” Gilberto’s claw moved slightly. “She has not been able to retract properly for three days. Her shell is far too small. She is simply too large for it now.”

“Why haven’t you asked for help before now?”

“I have been sitting here since this morning,” Gilberto said, “thinking of shells. I thought of twelve possible sources. I ruled out eleven of them. I have just ruled out the twelfth.” He adjusted his shell. It was considerably too large for him. It had always been too large. He had never once thought to apologise for it. “I am a crab in a shell. It is difficult to be objective about shells.”

“I’ll look,” Freddie said.

He spent the early part of the evening searching. The rocks at the cove end of the beach. The deep tide pools under the headland, where large things sometimes washed in on a high tide. The kelp beds, where shells got tangled and lost. He went as far as the old boat that had rested on the sand for years above the waterline, its wood gone pale and smooth. Nothing large enough. Nothing undamaged.

He was on his way back when he stopped.

The harbour wall. He had passed it that morning. He passed it most mornings. There was a large conch shell wedged into a crack at the base of the harbour steps, near the waterline. Where the stone went dark with damp at high tide. It had been there for as long as Freddie could remember. Sea lavender had grown through it, threading purple flowers out through the opening and up along the wall. He had never once looked at it as a shell. He had looked at it as part of the harbour.

He sat in front of it for a moment. The sea lavender had rooted through the shell. Its stems wove into every corner. The whole thing was fixed to the wall now, fixed as the stone itself. He could see that clearly. This one belonged where it was.

He turned for home.

The cottage was quiet when he arrived, his human not yet back from wherever the afternoon had taken them. The kitchen was still and warm, the light coming in low through the window. Freddie went to the windowsill where they kept the shells.

There were perhaps twenty of them, arranged without system. They collected naturally as a corgi and his human walked the same beach over time, bringing home what caught their eye. A long cone of pale ivory. A disc of something dark and ridged. At the front, lower down, a small spiral. Freddie had nosed it out of the wet sand near the southern rocks one morning. He carried it home without quite knowing why. At the back, a conch. Large and old, its colour faded to warm cream.

Freddie looked at it for a moment. This was their collection, his and his human’s. The beach kept offering things and they both agreed, without discussing it, to accept.

He took it carefully in his mouth and went back down to the shore.

Gilberto looked at the conch for a long time without speaking. Then he said, “Yes. That will do.”

He assembled the chain on the rocks above the tideline as the moon came up. The conch went to the largest crab. She tested it, drew herself into it, emerged. She left her old shell on the rock. The next crab moved into it. And the next. Freddie watched.

When it reached Gilberto’s shell, the crab who needed it was considerably larger than Gilberto. She was, Freddie realised, exactly the size for which Gilberto’s shell had always been designed. His old shell sat on the rock.

“That shell,” Freddie said gently, “is the right size.”

Gilberto looked at his shell. He looked at it for quite a long time.

“I have always been aware it ran slightly large for me,” he said. “I considered it a feature.”

He moved out of it.

His new shell, the one released from the next crab in the chain, was, if anything, even larger. He tested it. It wobbled as he moved. His head barely cleared the opening. He walked a small circle in it, adjusted his weight, then went around once more.

“Excellent,” said Gilberto.

At the end of the chain, Petra moved into her new shell. They all watched. She was very still inside it. She was testing the space. Then she retracted. She pulled all of herself inward. Her legs drew in one by one, until she was entirely gone. The shell sat silent on the rock.

For three days she had not been able to do that.

Gilberto stood in his enormous new shell and looked at the rock where she had disappeared.

“Buenas noches, Petra,” he said softly.

Freddie left them on the rocks as the moon rose over the headland.

He walked back along the harbour path. The shutters of Tiempo Honesto were closed, the shop dark. The square above was quiet. The fountain caught the moon on its water, steady and still.

The cottage was lit when he came up the path. The window held the kitchen warm against the dark. Inside, the air still carried the evening meal, bread and something slow. A small piece waited in his bowl. It had been set aside, the way it always was. He ate it. This was his, and his human knew it.

His human sat at the table. A book lay open, a cup gone cool beside it. They looked up when Freddie came in. Then their eyes went to the windowsill. To the row of shells, and the one space empty now at the back. They looked at the gap. Then they looked at Freddie, and smiled. It was the kind of smile that asks for nothing back. Then they turned back to their book.

After a while Freddie went to the bed. He circled once, twice, three times. On the last circle his body folded sideways against his human’s leg. He was down. The warmth ran the whole length of his side.

His human’s hand came to rest between his shoulders. It moved once, slow, down to the tip of his tail. Then it was still.

His tail stayed where it had come to rest.

Outside, on the rocks above the tideline, eight hermit crabs were settling. Each had found a shell that fit. Each one was home now, in something the right size at last.

Prince Freddie found the bottle at the tide line. A dark green wine bottle with two barnacles near the base. He bent his nose close. Beeswax. Something underneath.

The cork came out. Inside, rolled tightly, was a piece of paper.

Freddie unrolled it carefully with both paws and read.

The message said:

I am writing from a long way off, though I cannot tell you precisely how far. I want to describe what I remember while the details are still sharp. The beach: gold at low tide, dark and firm at high. A lighthouse that sweeps the water every twelve seconds. A café where they sometimes drop bits of jamón, not by accident. An old stone fountain in the village above, with a silver fish inside. The fish listens to the square’s business and finds it mostly good. Each morning, before the tourists, a corgi walks the tideline wearing a small crown. He walks as if the whole coast belongs to him, which in a way it does. These are the things I remember. I am writing them down so they are kept.

There was no signature.

Freddie read it twice. Then he sat down on the sand and looked at the sea for a long moment.

The lighthouse swept twelve seconds. Marisol was in the fountain. Someone had written this down. Freddie climbed toward the harbour. He rolled the message carefully, tucked it back into the bottle, and trotted up to the harbour.

Señor Tiempo was at his workbench, fitting a new escapement into a clock the size of a fist. He set down his tools and took the message in his steady hands.

He studied the paper. He held it to the light. He carried it to the window and examined the handwriting for a long time. The small brass clock ticked toward three fifteen. The grandfather clock swung faster.

“Quieto,“ Señor Tiempo said. The pendulum settled.

“The paper is old,” he said. “The content is present.” He handed back the message. He glanced at the grandfather clock. “They know that, too.”

Freddie went next to the village square.

Marisol was in her pool, turning slowly in the still water, a single orange blossom drifting on the surface. She read the message from the water, the paper held just at the pool’s edge.

She was quiet for longer than Señor Tiempo.

“I don’t know the hand,” she said.

“From when?” Freddie said.

“The stone doesn’t know,” Marisol said.

Freddie walked back down to the beach as the afternoon came in warm and long across the sand. He stood at the tide line, at the exact place where he had found the bottle that morning. The second tide was already beginning its approach, the water feeling its way up the sand in thin, clear sheets.

He held the bottle in his paws.

He rolled the message back into the bottle. Pressed the cork in. Held the glass cool and solid in his paws, the barnacles rough under his pads.

Then he set it at the water’s edge.

The tide took it.

He watched until it was past the breaking waves and moving with purpose. Then Freddie turned for home.

The cottage was warm ahead of him, its kitchen window lit. The smell of lunch still in the air, something with bread and something with cheese. In his bowl, a small piece had been set aside. He ate it. This was the cheese tax, which was his right, and his human understood this perfectly.

His human was at the table with a cup going cool in front of them. They looked up when Freddie came in, then at the windowsill, then back at Freddie, and smiled. The kind of smile that does not require anything back. Then his human looked back at what they were doing.

After a while Freddie went to the bed. He circled once, twice, three times. Then on the last circle his body went sideways toward his human’s leg. He was down. The warmth was along his whole left side.

His human’s hand found the ridge of his back and moved once, unhurried. It went from his shoulders to the tip of his tail, and was still.

His tail rested where it was.

Prince Freddie noticed the silence before he noticed anything else.

He was halfway along his morning patrol, the tide retreating and the sand still dark with it, when something shifted in his awareness. Not a sound. The absence of one. He stopped and stood quite still, his ears coming forward.

Every morning, the shells along the tideline made a sound. Different notes all at once. He had stopped noticing it. Now it was gone.

He walked to the tideline and looked down. Shells everywhere, as usual. But each one had something wedged in its opening. A tiny sliver of sea glass. Pale green, smoothed by years in the water. He crouched and sniffed one carefully. Then another. All of them. The whole length of the beach, as far as he could see in both directions.

He heard a small scraping sound from behind a rock further along, and trotted toward it.

Behind the rock, working with enormous concentration, was a hermit crab. Small, wearing a shell that was, as always, considerably too big for him. He was holding a sliver of sea glass up to a large whelk, his head tilted sideways, his whole body rigid with focus. After a moment, he made a soft, despairing sound.

“Perfecto would be this note,” he said to himself, “and you are not even close.”

He reached into the pile beside him. He selected another sliver and wedged it carefully into the whelk’s opening. The whelk went silent.

“Gilberto,” Freddie said.

The hermit crab spun around. He clutched his reference sliver of sea glass to his chest. His too-big shell swayed with the movement and then settled, slightly lopsided.

“Prince Freddie,” he said. “I can explain.”

“Please do,” Freddie said kindly, and sat down.

It turned out Gilberto had been working on this project for three days. He loved music. He had always loved the sound of the shells. Recently, he explained with increasing speed, he had realised that none were in tune with each other. Each one rang at its own pitch, which was technically incorrect. If they could all reach a single pure note, the beach would sound magnificent. He had researched it thoroughly. Well, he had thought about it very hard, which was in his view the next best thing. He had a reference tone: a sliver of sea glass with natural resonance. He was going shell by shell, blocking any that did not match it, until only the correct ones remained.

There were no correct ones remaining.

“I know how it sounds,” Gilberto said. He paused. “Or rather, I know how it no longer sounds. Which is, in fact, the problem.”

Freddie looked at the long, quiet tideline.

“What did it sound like,” he said, “before?”

Gilberto went quiet. He looked up and to the side, the way creatures do when they are listening to a memory rather than a sound.

“Beautiful,” he said softly. And then, after a moment: “Chaotic. Gloriously, maddeningly chaotic. Every shell its own pitch, all of them at once.” He adjusted his shell with a small, defeated click. “I had a very good system.”

“Will you try something for me?”

Gilberto agreed, cautiously. They walked together along the tideline, and one by one removed the sea glass from a dozen or so shells nearby. Not all of them. Just enough.

The shells began to sing again.

Gilberto held up his reference sliver. None of the notes matched it. Standing there in the morning air, with the tide pulling away and the light coming low and gold, the sound was the beach. It was this exact place at this exact hour. The shells were not singing a note. They were singing the shape of the shore.

Gilberto stood very still for a long time. His reference sliver caught the light and threw a pale shadow across his claw.

“That’s not wrong,” he said finally.

“It was never wrong,” Freddie said. “They were always playing what this beach sounds like. You were listening for what it should sound like instead.”

Gilberto was quiet for a long time. The sliver of sea glass sat in his claw, catching the morning light and throwing its colour across the sand. He looked at it. Then at the shells. Then back at the glass.

“I spent three days,” he said.

“I know.”

“And I had a clipboard,” he said. He looked at the beach.

Then he went along the tideline and removed every piece of sea glass. One by one, the shells began to sing.

Gilberto tucked his reference sliver away inside his shell.

“I’ll keep it,” he said. “But I think I’ve been using it wrong.” He held it up to the morning air, head tilted, still listening. “I’ve been using it to find what’s missing. I should have been using it to hear what’s there.”

Freddie left him like that, still holding the glass to the light.

He walked home. The shells sang behind him.

The cottage was already warm. The morning sun found the east-facing window. His human was in bed with a book. They patted the space beside them without looking up from the page. Just the space made.

Freddie hopped up. He circled once, twice, three times. On the third circle his legs simply stopped. He was already lying down. His nose rested on his paws. His chin found the right angle without decision. The warmth of his human close beside him was the whole fact of it.

His tail rested where it landed.

His human’s hand came then, once, from shoulder to tail, unhurried. Then it found the spot behind his ear. The one it always found. It stayed a moment. Then stilled.

Outside, the shells sang. All the different notes. Each one its own pitch.

Prince Freddie was watching the sunrise when he noticed something unusual in a shallow tide pool. A jellyfish, almost invisible except for a soft purple glow, was pulsing gently near the surface.

“Excuse me,” the jellyfish said softly. “Are you Prince Freddie?”

“I’m Freddie,” he said, sitting down carefully by the pool’s edge. “What’s your name?”

“I’m Celestina,” the jellyfish said. “And I have what everyone tells me is an impossible dream. I want to see the stars.”

Freddie tilted his head. “But the stars come out every night. You can see them from the water, can’t you?”

“That’s the problem,” Celestina’s bell rippled sadly. “I’m a jellyfish. We can’t look up. Our bodies don’t work that way. I can only see what’s in front of me or below me. Everyone in my bloom says I should just accept it, but I can’t stop thinking about them. The stars. I hear the fish talk about how beautiful they are, scattered across the darkness like silver sand. But I’ll never know what they look like.”

Freddie shifted on the rock and looked at Celestina, then upward at the open sky. The gulls wheeling above the tide line. The clouds moving east. All the things she would never see from where she floated.

“Wait,” he said.

“I came into this tide pool on the morning tide,” Celestina explained. “I was trying to get close to the surface, hoping I could angle myself to see upward. But it doesn’t work. Our bells only face one way. Another night will come and go, and I won’t have seen them.”

Freddie paced around the tide pool.

“What if reflections came down?” Freddie said. “Still water. Like a mirror.”

Celestina’s glow brightened. “How?”

“We’ll need help.”

Tia arrived, because Tia always arrived when something was happening. She bounded up from the direction of the lighthouse, stopped, looked at the tide pool, looked at Freddie, and sat down.

“What are we doing?” she said.

“We need to find a sheltered pool,” Freddie said. “Protected from wind. A surface like glass. And we need to get Celestina there.”

Tia thought for approximately two seconds. “The Moon Pool. Past the headland. I found it last week. It’s sheltered by rocks on all sides, fed by a spring. The water barely moves.”

They guided Celestina there through the shallow channels between tide pools, slowly, carefully, the way you move with fragile things. Where two pools had no connection, Freddie dug. His short front legs worked fast, sand arcing behind him in a wide fan, his ears swinging with every stroke. Tia dug from the other side. Longer-legged and messier. Until the water found the gap. Celestina could follow. It took most of the afternoon. By the time they arrived, the sun was beginning its descent.

The Moon Pool was a circle of water, protected by boulders, fed by a spring.

They waited for dark.

They settled in as sunset painted the sky. Celestina floated in the centre of the Moon Pool. Her purple glow was the only movement. Freddie lay with his chin on his paws. Tia, for once in her energetic life, managed to sit completely motionless beside him.

The first stars appeared.

“Is it happening?” Celestina said softly. “I see something... little points of light on the water’s surface, but are those really...?”

“Those are stars,” Freddie said softly. “Keep watching.”

More stars emerged as darkness deepened. The Moon Pool’s surface became a perfect mirror of the heavens. The Milky Way appeared, a river of light stretching across the water. Planets glowed steady and bright. Constellations wheeled slowly in their ancient patterns.

And Celestina could see all of it.

Her glow pulsed with wonder. “They’re beautiful,” she breathed. “More extraordinary than anyone described. They look like... like the bioluminescence of my cousins, but frozen in place. Like someone took all the light in all the oceans and scattered it across darkness. Oh, that bright one. And there, five in a row. And is that one blue?”

For an hour, the three of them held still. The stars wheeled in the water.

Finally, as the tide began to turn, Freddie spoke gently. “Celestina, the high tide is coming. The deep water will be here soon.”

“I know,” Celestina said. “I’m ready. But before we go, I want to say thank you. All of you gave up your evening to grant an impossible wish. That’s a kind of magic more wonderful than stars.”

“The stars will be there tomorrow night too,” Freddie said softly.

They guided her back to the ocean as the tide rose. At the edge of deep water, Celestina pulsed her goodbye, her purple glow bright with happiness. Then she descended into the depths, carrying the memory of stars with her.

Tia walked Freddie home. They moved without hurrying.

They parted at their usual spot. Freddie continued home alone. He passed through the village square. He stopped at the old fountain. Its surface was dark. He looked at it. Then walked on.

His human was already asleep. A small lamp was on in the window. Freddie paused at the door. Through the glass, he could see the stars.

The lamp in the window cast a small, warm circle on the ceiling. Freddie watched it for a moment. A single light, in the dark, steady and still.

He ate a late dinner quietly, then climbed onto the bed with care, not wanting to disturb the sleeping.

He circled once, twice, three times. Then he lay down slowly, paw by paw. All four finally allowed to rest. He pressed his nose into the warm fold. And stayed there.

His human’s hand moved along his back. Checking turns into saying goodnight. It paused at his ear. Then both were still.

He let out one long, slow breath.

Far below, the jellyfish drifted in dark water, her purple glow steady and sure.

Prince Freddie noticed the chairs first.

They were stacked, four high, on top of the tables outside the beach café.

He sat down on the sand and looked at them.

Further along, two teenagers were attempting to take down the volleyball net. One held the pole, the other pulled at the cord, and they were clearly disagreeing about the correct method. Freddie watched for a moment. They stuffed it all into the bag. About two minutes later.

The beach was nearly empty. It had been thinning all week, the tourists drifting away day by day as the air cooled. Now there were only a handful. A man reading at the water’s edge. Two older women with their shoes in their hands. A child collecting stones.

Summer was finished.

Catalina appeared in the café doorway with a cloth in her hand. Her look was the kind of thoughtful that comes before a good rest. The way you feel after a full day, ready to pause.

“Prince Freddie,” she said. “Good. You’re here. Come in.”

He followed her inside. Machines were covered in cloth. Chairs were turned upside down on the inside tables. A few last things lined up on the counter, waiting to be packed. Catalina went behind the counter and opened the ice cream cabinet.

“Last scoop of the year,” she said. “It’s a tradition. The last customer of the season gets whatever flavour they like, no charge.” She looked at him. “You are not technically a customer. You cannot state a preference. But I choose to overlook both things.”

She gave him a small cup of whipped cream, the kind she kept for dogs who wandered in looking hopeful. This happened more often than people assumed. He accepted it with the dignity appropriate to the occasion.

She came around the counter with a coffee and sat on the step in the doorway, looking out at the beach. Freddie sat beside her.

They watched the man finish his book, fold it under his arm, and wade into the sea up to his knees. He stood there with his trousers getting wet, apparently fine with this. The two women with their shoes had reached the far end of the beach and were turning back. The child had moved from collecting stones to digging, as children at beaches eventually always do.

“The same next year,” Catalina said. “More or less. Different tourists, same beach. The net goes back up in April.”

“Do you mind?” Freddie said. “The closing.”

She thought about this in the way she thought about most things: without hurrying.

“No,” she said. “I look forward to missing it. That sounds strange. But there is something good about putting a thing down for a while. When you pick it back up in spring, you can feel how much you like it.” She drank her coffee. “If it were always open, it would just be the café. Closing it for winter means it becomes something you return to.”

Freddie thought of Señor Tiempo, whose clock stopped at three-fifteen every afternoon.

He walked toward home along the beach.

“Hasta la primavera,“ he said.

Catalina looked at him with some surprise. Then she smiled, the kind that takes a moment to arrive. “Hasta la primavera, Prince Freddie.”

He left her closing up. Things went into boxes. Shutters came across the windows. Each one closed behind him.

The beach was quiet. The light had shifted into evening. He walked slowly. The sand was cold under his paws.

The particular sweetness of this hour. The quality of the day exhaling. Not a smell exactly. More like lingering heat. He stopped at the gate.

His human had made soup. The smell of it was in every room.

The old village square was the kind of place that most people walked through without stopping.

It sat just above the beach. A narrow lane between whitewashed walls led to it. Cobblestones wore smooth in the middle. An orange tree grew in one corner. Its roots had lifted two cobbles. Nobody put them back. Strings of faded bunting criss-crossed between buildings. Nobody had taken those down either.

In the centre of the square stood a stone fountain. It was round and low, carved from pale limestone. Fish and waves ran along its rim. It had not worked in a very long time. The drain was blocked. The pipe had rusted shut. It held only a shallow pool of rainwater. Clear and still, catching the sky.

Prince Freddie had passed the square a hundred times. But tonight, on his way back from the harbour wall, he turned down the lane instead of home.

He wasn’t sure why. He just did.

The square was empty. The last light was still held in the stones. Golden and amber. The kind that lingers after the sun is gone. The orange tree was in blossom. The scent was extraordinary. Not sharp. Not sweet. Something in between. The smell of evening and warm stone and small flowers.

Freddie stopped at the top of the steps that led down into the square. Three shallow steps, worn smooth in the centre.

He hopped down them, one at a time, his crown tilting with each small bounce. The cobblestones at the bottom were smooth and still warm. The air smelled of orange blossom and sun-baked limestone, thick and unhurried, with nowhere to go. He walked to the fountain and sat beside it.

The square held still.

A voice. Very small. Coming from the fountain.

“Oh,” the voice said. “You stayed.”

Freddie looked into the pool of still water. There, in the last few inches of rainwater in the fountain’s basin, was a small fish. Barely the length of Freddie’s paw. Silver, with fins the colour of smoke.

“I’m sorry,” the fish said. “I didn’t mean to startle you. Most people who come into the square don’t stay long enough to notice me. They cross quickly, they check their phones, they go home. You sat down.”

“I often sit down,” Freddie said.

“I know. I’ve seen you pass many times. You always look like you’re listening to something.”

“I usually am,” Freddie said, which was true.

“My name is Marisol,” the fish said. “And I have been in this fountain for four years, two months, and eleven days. Since the day it stopped working and everyone assumed I had dried up with it.” She paused. “I didn’t, obviously.”

“Obviously,” Freddie agreed, looking at her. She was quite clearly very much alive. “But doesn’t it bother you? The pool is so small.”

Marisol was quiet for a moment. The surface of the water barely moved.

“It did, at first,” she said finally. “But I learned the water stays deep enough to breathe.”

Marisol swam a slow circle. “People sat on its edge. Children put their hands in the water. A man came every morning to read. A woman brought her coffee at the same hour. One morning they noticed each other.”

“Can you hear it?” Freddie said.

“I hear the whole story of this square,” Marisol said softly.

He looked at the fountain’s carved rim. The small fish and waves, worn soft now.

“Do you ever want to leave?” he said.

Marisol drifted still in the water.

“No,” she said.

Freddie’s tail, which had been very still, gave one slow wag.

They stayed together as the square grew darker and the orange blossom scent deepened. Freddie rested his chin on the fountain’s rim, just above the still water. Close enough that he could see the last daylight held in it.

Marisol swam her slow circle. The stone hummed its long, patient chord.

“Will you stay?” Freddie said after a while.

“Yes,” Marisol said.

“I’ll come back,” he said.

“I know,” said Marisol. “The fountain will remember.”

Freddie walked home through jasmine-scented streets. The lane between white walls. The path along the beach. Then the turn toward the cottage.

The smell of warm timber reached him before the door. The walls held the day’s heat. He stood at the gate. He breathed it in.

His human was already in bed. The reading lamp was on, a book face-down on the covers.

Freddie hopped up quietly. He circled once, twice, three times. Each circle slower than the last. Then he pressed his nose into the warm fold. Where the covers met the pillow. The rest followed, settling in stages down.

He let out one long, slow breath.

Somewhere in the square, the orange tree dropped a blossom. The water barely moved. The stone held it, the way it held everything, quietly.

Prince Freddie had a plan.

He had been working on it since mid-afternoon. The light was turning gold. The tide pools would be filling. Small, shy fish would move into the shallows. He had pictured it with care. The walk along the sand, the still water, the moment when one came close. An excellent plan.

He was sitting by the door, ready, when his human came home.

The door opened. Freddie dropped into his big stretch. Front legs long on the floor, crown dipping, tail sweeping. He held it for a moment. Then he straightened. His ears folded soft. He let out a quiet awoo. The kind that covered the essentials.

His human’s hand came down to find his ear.

The hand moved away. His human went through to the kitchen. Freddie’s tail, still moving, gradually slowed without him deciding to slow it.

He watched.

His human moved through the kitchen. Filled a glass of water. Set it on the counter and stood at the window looking at the sea. Not looking at it the way you look at something you are trying to see. Looking at it the way you look at something that is yours. Something you chose, that chose you back.

His human stood without moving. The beach through the window. The cottage warm behind them. The light on the water doing what it did at this hour.

He thought briefly about the fish. They were, he decided, almost certainly patient creatures. The rocks would be there tomorrow. He turned away from the door, went to his spot on the rug near the sofa, and lay down.

His human sat eventually. In the reading chair, with the good lamp on, but with no book open. Just the warm light, and the sound of the sea coming in off the water. Freddie moved himself across the rug and settled at their feet. Not underfoot, not climbing up without an invitation. Just present, his solid warmth against their ankle, his breathing slow and there.

The evening went on around them.

Outside, the waves came in and went back. The lighthouse at the far end made its regular sweep across the water. The village above it was quiet. The night went on.

At some point his human reached down, not looking, and let their hand rest on his back.

He did not make a thing of this.

Later, he went to the front door and stood for a moment on the step. The air had cooled. The beach was silver and unhurried. The lavender along Señora Benilde’s path reached him on the slight breeze, soft and certain, the way it always did at this hour.

He looked toward the tide pools. He could see the dark shape of the rocks at the far end, familiar and unchanged. He stood and looked for the length of a few slow breaths.

Then he turned around and went back inside.

His human was in bed by then. The far lamp was dark. Freddie could tell they were resting, not asleep. He had learned to tell the difference. He was good at this.

He hopped up onto the bed. His short legs tucked under him. His crown tilted with the jump. He moved along the warm ridge of the covers. He pressed his back into his human’s belly. Fitting there like a stone in a worn hollow. His human’s arm came down. Not an embrace. A weight. Settling across him without any fuss.

He circled once, twice, three times. His breathing slowed.

The lighthouse was still going. The beach, unchanged.

Prince Freddie was walking along the harbour wall when he heard something unusual. Among the familiar sounds of waves and seagulls and boat ropes creaking, there was a rhythmic ticking. Not the kind from a watch. Something slower, deeper, with pauses that felt deliberate.

He followed the sound to a small shop tucked between two larger buildings. The sign above the door said Relojería in faded gold letters. A clock shop. Freddie had passed it countless times but had never seen it open. Today, the door stood slightly ajar.

Inside, the ticking was everywhere. Dozens of clocks lined the walls, each one marking time in its own way. But something was wrong. None of them agreed. One said three o'clock. Another said half past nine. A third had stopped entirely at midnight, its hands frozen in a perfect vertical line.

“Hello?” Freddie said softly.

“Back here,” came a voice from behind a curtain at the rear of the shop.

Freddie made his way through the narrow aisles. His short legs were careful not to bump the stacked clock parts. Behind the curtain, he found an elderly man at a workbench. A jeweller’s loupe was in one eye. He held a tiny gear up to the light.

“I’m Señor Tiempo,” the man said without looking up. “And before you ask, yes, I know my clocks are all wrong. I’ve forgotten how to fix them.”

Freddie sat down carefully beside the workbench. “You’ve forgotten? But you’re a clockmaker.”

“I am,” Señor Tiempo agreed, setting down the gear. He removed the loupe and looked at Freddie properly for the first time. “Or I was. For sixty years, I understood time better than anyone on this coast. I could hear what a clock needed just by listening to it tick. But last month, something strange happened. I woke up one morning and time didn’t make sense anymore.”

“What do you mean?”

Señor Tiempo gestured at the shop around them. “Time is supposed to be constant, yes? One second follows another, always the same speed, always the same direction. But that’s not how it feels. Some moments stretch out forever. Others disappear before you notice them. Morning coffee with someone you love is different time. Waiting for dreaded news is different time. Both are an hour, but not the same.”

“So what happened to your clocks?” Freddie said.

“They started telling the truth,” Señor Tiempo said simply. “This one here,” he pointed to a small brass clock on his workbench, “stops every day at three fifteen. For a long time I thought it was faulty.” He paused. “Then I remembered what three fifteen is.”

Freddie waited.

“Siesta,” Señor Tiempo said. “The whole harbour stops. The café closes. The boats tie up. The square empties, except for the cats.” He set down the gear he had been turning in his fingers. “For sixty years I have tried to make every clock in this shop run straight through three fifteen. Last month I stopped trying.”

Freddie’s tail gave one slow wag. “Because three fifteen is the best hour?”

“Because three fifteen is true,” Señor Tiempo said. He looked at Freddie steadily.

Freddie sat with this for a moment.

“It tells true time,” Freddie said. “That is different from correct time.”

Señor Tiempo looked at him with something between surprise and recognition. “Exactly so,” he said.

He reached out and wound the small brass clock carefully. His hands were very steady. The hands of someone who had spent sixty years touching small, precise things. He set it running again, knowing it would stop at three fifteen tomorrow, which was entirely correct.

Señor Tiempo walked to a grandfather clock in the corner. It ran slow on quiet days because quiet days felt longer. He opened its glass face and set the pendulum swinging. He showed Freddie a smaller clock. It chimed when something beautiful happened. It chimed at sunset every day.

The cottage came into view at the end of the path. The lamp was already lit in the window.

Freddie stood at the gate for a moment. The sunset clock in the harbour shop would be chiming right now. He couldn’t hear it from here, but he felt it. The air still held the shape of the sound.

His human had made something with garlic and tomatoes. The smell reached to the door. After dinner, Freddie hopped onto the bed. His legs were pleasantly tired. His human was already there.
