He was halfway along his morning patrol, the tide retreating and the sand still dark with it, when something shifted in his awareness. Not a sound. The absence of one. He stopped and stood quite still, his ears coming forward.

Every morning, the shells along the tideline made a sound. Different notes all at once. He had stopped noticing it. Now it was gone.

He walked to the tideline and looked down. Shells everywhere, as usual. But each one had something wedged in its opening. A tiny sliver of sea glass. Pale green, smoothed by years in the water. Behind the rock, working with enormous concentration, was a hermit crab. Small, wearing a shell that was, as always, considerably too big for him. He was holding a sliver of sea glass up to a large whelk, his head tilted sideways, his whole body rigid with focus. After a moment, he made a soft, despairing sound.

“Perfecto would be this note,” he said to himself, “and you are not even close.”

He reached into the pile beside him. He selected another sliver and wedged it carefully into the whelk’s opening. The whelk went silent.

“Gilberto,” Freddie said.

The hermit crab spun around. He clutched his reference sliver of sea glass to his chest. His too-big shell swayed with the movement and then settled, slightly lopsided.

“Prince Freddie,” he said. “I can explain.”

“Please do,” Freddie said kindly, and sat down.

It turned out Gilberto had been working on this project for three days. He loved music. He had always loved the sound of the shells. Recently, he explained with increasing speed, he had realised that none were in tune with each other. Each one rang at its own pitch, which was technically incorrect. If they could all reach a single pure note, the beach would sound magnificent. He had researched it thoroughly. Well, he had thought about it very hard, which was in his view the next best thing. He had a reference tone: a sliver of sea glass with natural resonance. He was going shell by shell, blocking any that did not match it, until only the correct ones remained.

There were no correct ones remaining.

“I know how it sounds,” Gilberto said. He paused. “Or rather, I know how it no longer sounds. Which is, in fact, the problem.”

Freddie looked at the long, quiet tideline.

“What did it sound like,” he said, “before?”

Gilberto went quiet. He looked up and to the side, the way creatures do when they are listening to a memory rather than a sound.

“Beautiful,” he said softly. And then, after a moment: “Chaotic. Gloriously, maddeningly chaotic. Every shell its own pitch, all of them at once.” He adjusted his shell with a small, defeated click. “I had a very good system.”

“Will you try something for me?”

Gilberto agreed, cautiously. They walked together along the tideline, and one by one removed the sea glass from a dozen or so shells nearby. Not all of them. Just enough.

The shells began to sing again.

Gilberto held up his reference sliver. None of the notes matched it. Standing there in the morning air, with the tide pulling away and the light coming low and gold, the sound was the beach. It was this exact place at this exact hour. The shells were not singing a note. They were singing the shape of the shore.

Gilberto stood very still for a long time. His reference sliver caught the light and threw a pale shadow across his claw.

“That’s not wrong,” he said finally.

“It was never wrong,” Freddie said. “They were always playing what this beach sounds like. You were listening for what it should sound like instead.”

Gilberto was quiet for a long time. The sliver of sea glass sat in his claw, catching the morning light and throwing its colour across the sand. He looked at it. Then at the shells. Then back at the glass.

“I spent three days,” he said.

“I know.”

“And I had a clipboard,” he said. He looked at the beach.

Then he went along the tideline and removed every piece of sea glass. One by one, the shells began to sing.

Gilberto tucked his reference sliver away inside his shell.

“I’ll keep it,” he said. “But I think I’ve been using it wrong.” He held it up to the morning air, head tilted, still listening. “I’ve been using it to find what’s missing. I should have been using it to hear what’s there.”

Freddie left him like that, still holding the glass to the light.

He walked home. The shells sang behind him.

The cottage was already warm. The morning sun found the east-facing window. His human was in bed with a book. They patted the space beside them without looking up from the page. Just the space made.

Freddie hopped up. He circled once, twice, three times. On the third circle his legs simply stopped. He was already lying down. His nose rested on his paws. His chin found the right angle without decision. The warmth of his human close beside him was the whole fact of it.

“I’m Celestina,” the jellyfish said. “And I have what everyone tells me is an impossible dream. I want to see the stars.”

Freddie tilted his head. “But the stars come out every night. You can see them from the water, can’t you?”

“That’s the problem,” Celestina’s bell rippled sadly. “I’m a jellyfish. We can’t look up. Our bodies don’t work that way. I can only see what’s in front of me or below me. Everyone in my bloom says I should just accept it, but I can’t stop thinking about them. The stars. I hear the fish talk about how beautiful they are, scattered across the darkness like silver sand. But I’ll never know what they look like.”

Freddie shifted on the rock and looked at Celestina, then upward at the open sky. The gulls wheeling above the tide line. The clouds moving east. All the things she would never see from where she floated.

“Wait,” he said.

“I came into this tide pool on the morning tide,” Celestina explained. “I was trying to get close to the surface, hoping I could angle myself to see upward. But it doesn’t work. Our bells only face one way. Another night will come and go, and I won’t have seen them.”

Freddie paced around the tide pool.

“What if reflections came down?” Freddie said. “Still water. Like a mirror.”

Celestina’s glow brightened. “How?”

“We’ll need help.”

Tia arrived, because Tia always arrived when something was happening. She bounded up from the direction of the lighthouse, stopped, looked at the tide pool, looked at Freddie, and sat down.

“What are we doing?” she said.

“We need to find a sheltered pool,” Freddie said. “Protected from wind. A surface like glass. And we need to get Celestina there.”

Tia thought for approximately two seconds. “The Moon Pool. Past the headland. I found it last week. It’s sheltered by rocks on all sides, fed by a spring. The water barely moves.”

They guided Celestina there through the shallow channels between tide pools, slowly, carefully, the way you move with fragile things. Where two pools had no connection, Freddie dug. His short front legs worked fast, sand arcing behind him in a wide fan, his ears swinging with every stroke. Tia dug from the other side. Longer-legged and messier. Until the water found the gap. Celestina could follow. It took most of the afternoon. By the time they arrived, the sun was beginning its descent.

The Moon Pool was a circle of water, protected by boulders, fed by a spring.

“Those are stars,” Freddie said softly. “Keep watching.”

More stars emerged as darkness deepened. The Moon Pool’s surface became a perfect mirror of the heavens. The Milky Way appeared, a river of light stretching across the water. Planets glowed steady and bright. Constellations wheeled slowly in their ancient patterns.

And Celestina could see all of it.

Her glow pulsed with wonder. “They’re beautiful,” she breathed. “More extraordinary than anyone described. They look like... like the bioluminescence of my cousins, but frozen in place. “I know,” Celestina said. “I’m ready. But before we go, I want to say thank you. All of you gave up your evening to grant an impossible wish. That’s a kind of magic more wonderful than stars.”

“The stars will be there tomorrow night too,” Freddie said softly.

They guided her back to the ocean as the tide rose. At the edge of deep water, Celestina pulsed her goodbye, her purple glow bright with happiness. Then she descended into the depths, carrying the memory of stars with her.

Tia walked Freddie home. They moved without hurrying.

They parted at their usual spot. Freddie continued home alone. He passed through the village square. He stopped at the old fountain. Its surface was dark. He looked at it. Then walked on.

His human was already asleep. A small lamp was on in the window. Freddie paused at the door. Through the glass, he could see the stars.

He sat down on the sand and looked at them.

Further along, two teenagers were attempting to take down the volleyball net. One held the pole, the other pulled at the cord, and they were clearly disagreeing about the correct method. Freddie watched for a moment. They stuffed it all into the bag. About two minutes later.

The beach was nearly empty. It had been thinning all week, the tourists drifting away day by day as the air cooled. Now there were only a handful. A man reading at the water’s edge. Two older women with their shoes in their hands. A child collecting stones.

Summer was finished.

Catalina appeared in the café doorway with a cloth in her hand. Her look was the kind of thoughtful that comes before a good rest. The way you feel after a full day, ready to pause.

“Prince Freddie,” she said. “Good. You’re here. Come in.”

“Last scoop of the year,” she said. “It’s a tradition. The last customer of the season gets whatever flavour they like, no charge.” She looked at him. “You are not technically a customer. You cannot state a preference. But I choose to overlook both things.”

She gave him a small cup of whipped cream, the kind she kept for dogs who wandered in looking hopeful. This happened more often than people assumed. He accepted it with the dignity appropriate to the occasion.

She came around the counter with a coffee and sat on the step in the doorway, looking out at the beach. Freddie sat beside her.

They watched the man finish his book, fold it under his arm, and wade into the sea up to his knees. He stood there with his trousers getting wet, apparently fine with this. The two women with their shoes had reached the far end of the beach and were turning back. The child had moved from collecting stones to digging, as children at beaches eventually always do.

“The same next year,” Catalina said. “More or less. Different tourists, same beach. The net goes back up in April.”

“Do you mind?” Freddie said. “The closing.”

She thought about this in the way she thought about most things: without hurrying.

“No,” she said. “I look forward to missing it. That sounds strange. But there is something good about putting a thing down for a while. When you pick it back up in spring, you can feel how much you like it.” She drank her coffee. “If it were always open, it would just be the café. Closing it for winter means it becomes something you return to.”

Freddie thought of Señor Tiempo, whose clock stopped at three-fifteen every afternoon.

He walked toward home along the beach.

“Hasta la primavera,“ he said.

Catalina looked at him with some surprise. Then she smiled, the kind that takes a moment to arrive. “Hasta la primavera, Prince Freddie.”

He left her closing up. Things went into boxes. Shutters came across the windows. Each one closed behind him.

The beach was quiet. The light had shifted into evening. He walked slowly. The sand was cold under his paws.

Nobody put them back. Strings of faded bunting criss-crossed between buildings. Nobody had taken those down either.

In the centre of the square stood a stone fountain. It was round and low, carved from pale limestone. Fish and waves ran along its rim. It had not worked in a very long time. The drain was blocked. The pipe had rusted shut. It held only a shallow pool of rainwater. Clear and still, catching the sky.

Prince Freddie had passed the square a hundred times. But tonight, on his way back from the harbour wall, he turned down the lane instead of home.

He wasn’t sure why. He just did.

The square was empty. The last light was still held in the stones. Golden and amber. The kind that lingers after the sun is gone. The orange tree was in blossom. The scent was extraordinary. Not sharp. Not sweet. Something in between. The smell of evening and warm stone and small flowers.

Freddie stopped at the top of the steps that led down into the square. Three shallow steps, worn smooth in the centre.

A voice. Very small. Coming from the fountain.

“Oh,” the voice said. “You stayed.”

Freddie looked into the pool of still water. There, in the last few inches of rainwater in the fountain’s basin, was a small fish. Barely the length of Freddie’s paw. Silver, with fins the colour of smoke.

“I’m sorry,” the fish said. “I didn’t mean to startle you. Most people who come into the square don’t stay long enough to notice me. They cross quickly, they check their phones, they go home. You sat down.”

“I often sit down,” Freddie said.

“I know. I’ve seen you pass many times. You always look like you’re listening to something.”

“I usually am,” Freddie said, which was true.

“My name is Marisol,” the fish said. “And I have been in this fountain for four years, two months, and eleven days. Since the day it stopped working and everyone assumed I had dried up with it.” She paused. “I didn’t, obviously.”

“Obviously,” Freddie agreed, looking at her. She was quite clearly very much alive. “But doesn’t it bother you? The pool is so small.”

Marisol was quiet for a moment. The surface of the water barely moved.

“It did, at first,” she said finally. “But I learned the water stays deep enough to breathe.”

Marisol swam a slow circle. “People sat on its edge. Children put their hands in the water. A man came every morning to read. A woman brought her coffee at the same hour. One morning they noticed each other.”

“Can you hear it?” Freddie said.

“I hear the whole story of this square,” Marisol said softly.

He looked at the fountain’s carved rim. The small fish and waves, worn soft now.

“Do you ever want to leave?” he said.

Marisol drifted still in the water.

“No,” she said.

Freddie’s tail, which had been very still, gave one slow wag.

They stayed together as the square grew darker and the orange blossom scent deepened. Freddie rested his chin on the fountain’s rim, just above the still water. Close enough that he could see the last daylight held in it.

Marisol swam her slow circle. The stone hummed its long, patient chord.

“Will you stay?” Freddie said after a while.

“Yes,” Marisol said.

“I’ll come back,” he said.

“I know,” said Marisol. “The fountain will remember.”

Freddie walked home through jasmine-scented streets. The lane between white walls. The path along the beach. Then the turn toward the cottage.

The smell of warm timber reached him before the door. The walls held the day’s heat. He stood at the gate. He breathed it in.

His human was already in bed. The reading lamp was on, a book face-down on the covers.

His human sat eventually. In the reading chair, with the good lamp on, but with no book open. Just the warm light, and the sound of the sea coming in off the water. Freddie moved himself across the rug and settled at their feet. Not underfoot, not climbing up without an invitation. Outside, the waves came in and went back. The lighthouse at the far end made its regular sweep across the water. The village above it was quiet. The night went on.

At some point his human reached down, not looking, and let their hand rest on his back.

He did not make a thing of this.

Later, he went to the front door and stood for a moment on the step. The air had cooled. The beach was silver and unhurried. The lavender along Señora Benilde’s path reached him on the slight breeze, soft and certain, the way it always did at this hour.

He looked toward the tide pools. He could see the dark shape of the rocks at the far end, familiar and unchanged. He stood and looked for the length of a few slow breaths.

Then he turned around and went back inside.

His human was in bed by then. The far lamp was dark. Freddie could tell they were resting, not asleep. He had learned to tell the difference. He was good at this.

He hopped up onto the bed. His short legs tucked under him. His crown tilted with the jump. He moved along the warm ridge of the covers. He pressed his back into his human’s belly. Fitting there like a stone in a worn hollow. His human’s arm came down. Not an embrace. A weight. Settling across him without any fuss.

He followed the sound to a small shop tucked between two larger buildings. The sign above the door said Relojería in faded gold letters. A clock shop. Freddie had passed it countless times but had never seen it open. Today, the door stood slightly ajar.

Inside, the ticking was everywhere. Dozens of clocks lined the walls, each one marking time in its own way. But something was wrong. None of them agreed. One said three o'clock. Another said half past nine. A third had stopped entirely at midnight, its hands frozen in a perfect vertical line.

“Hello?” Freddie said softly.

“Back here,” came a voice from behind a curtain at the rear of the shop.

Freddie made his way through the narrow aisles. His short legs were careful not to bump the stacked clock parts. Behind the curtain, he found an elderly man at a workbench. A jeweller’s loupe was in one eye. He held a tiny gear up to the light.

“I’m Señor Tiempo,” the man said without looking up. “And before you ask, yes, I know my clocks are all wrong. I’ve forgotten how to fix them.”

Freddie sat down carefully beside the workbench. “You’ve forgotten? But you’re a clockmaker.”

“I am,” Señor Tiempo agreed, setting down the gear. He removed the loupe and looked at Freddie properly for the first time. “Or I was. For sixty years, I understood time better than anyone on this coast. I could hear what a clock needed just by listening to it tick. But last month, something strange happened. I woke up one morning and time didn’t make sense anymore.”

“What do you mean?”

Señor Tiempo gestured at the shop around them. “Time is supposed to be constant, yes? One second follows another, always the same speed, always the same direction. But that’s not how it feels. Some moments stretch out forever. Others disappear before you notice them. Morning coffee with someone you love is different time. Waiting for dreaded news is different time. Both are an hour, but not the same.”

“So what happened to your clocks?” Freddie said.

“They started telling the truth,” Señor Tiempo said simply. “This one here,” he pointed to a small brass clock on his workbench, “stops every day at three fifteen. For a long time I thought it was faulty.” He paused. “Then I remembered what three fifteen is.”

Freddie waited.

“Siesta,” Señor Tiempo said. “The whole harbour stops. The café closes. The boats tie up. The square empties, except for the cats.” He set down the gear he had been turning in his fingers. “For sixty years I have tried to make every clock in this shop run straight through three fifteen. Last month I stopped trying.”

Freddie’s tail gave one slow wag. “Because three fifteen is the best hour?”

“Because three fifteen is true,” Señor Tiempo said. He looked at Freddie steadily.

Freddie sat with this for a moment.

“It tells true time,” Freddie said. “That is different from correct time.”

Señor Tiempo looked at him with something between surprise and recognition. “Exactly so,” he said.

He reached out and wound the small brass clock carefully. His hands were very steady. The hands of someone who had spent sixty years touching small, precise things. He set it running again, knowing it would stop at three fifteen tomorrow, which was entirely correct.

Señor Tiempo walked to a grandfather clock in the corner. It ran slow on quiet days because quiet days felt longer. He opened its glass face and set the pendulum swinging. He showed Freddie a smaller clock. It chimed when something beautiful happened. It chimed at sunset every day.

Three clocks, each telling a different truth.

“You haven’t forgotten how to be a clockmaker,” Freddie said. “You’ve learned to make different kinds.”

Señor Tiempo looked around his shop, seeing it differently now. “I’ll need a new sign.”

“What will you call it?”

The old man smiled for the first time since Freddie had arrived. “Tiempo Honesto. Honest Time.”

Freddie walked home as evening settled. He came through the village square. He stopped at the old stone fountain. The light was fading. The air was warm. The water in the basin was still. He thought about the brass clock. The one that stopped at three fifteen every day.

The cottage came into view at the end of the path. The lamp was already lit in the window.

Freddie stood at the gate for a moment. The sunset clock in the harbour shop would be chiming right now. He couldn’t hear it from here, but he felt it. The air still held the shape of the sound.

“We have found it,” Indie said.

“Found what?” Freddie said.

“Our cave,” Malva said.

Freddie looked at it. It was deep, broad enough for two dachshunds to lie side by side. The floor was dry. It had the good, cold smell of a cueva. Salt and shadow and stone that had been washed through many times. The walls were striped with interesting minerals in ochre and grey. There was a natural shelf at roughly dachshund-sitting height.

“It has a shelf,” Malva said.

“I see that,” Freddie said. His tail had stilled. He also saw the waterline on the cave walls. A dark horizontal mark about four feet up. The wet sand where the floor began. The smell of recent ocean.

“When would you be living here?” he said.

“Starting tonight,” Indie said. “We have discussed it. The coast suits us. The cave is ready. There is no reason to delay.”

“Have you considered the tide?”

“We have considered the tide,” Indie said.

“The tide comes in at around half past seven this evening,” Freddie said.

“We will be settled by then.”

“Into the cave.”

“Which the tide fills to approximately here,” Freddie said, and pointed his nose to the dark waterline on the cave wall.

Indie and Malva looked at the waterline. They looked at each other.

“There is a shelf,” Malva said.

“There is,” Freddie said.

“We would be on the shelf.”

“The waterline is above the shelf.”

“How far above?”

“About a foot.”

Malva looked at Indie. Indie looked at the cave. A long moment of Swedish deliberation passed.

“We will reassess at half past six,” Indie said. “In the meantime, we are going to look at the rest of the headland.”

Freddie waited on the beach. He completed his patrol, walking from the western end to the flat rocks and back, which was farther than it looked. Indie and Malva were still there at half past six. The blanket was on the cave floor. The rubber hedgehog sat on the shelf. They had arranged the water bowl. They had worked out how to fit on the shelf.

At twenty-seven minutes past seven, the tide arrived. It did not announce itself. It simply began, as it always did. Filling the lower beach first, then advancing up the sand.

“Come out,” Freddie said. Indie’s voice came back that they were on the shelf.

Ten minutes in, the water reached the cave entrance. Freddie waded in. The water was cold. It came up to his chest. His hindquarters rose at once. Corgis float stern-up in water. He swam with dignity, his small crown angled well past its usual tilt.

Inside, Indie and Malva were on the shelf. They were wet from the knees down. The sea had taken interest in the shelf. They were not submerged. They looked at the water filling their cave with scientific interest.

“This is cold,” Malva said.

“Yes,” Freddie said.

“But quite interesting,” Indie said.

They watched the water for a while. The cave changed completely when it was full. The sound was different from anything it made when dry. The walls turned reflective. The light came in green and moving. Small fish appeared from nowhere and investigated the rubber hedgehog with great interest. The hedgehog did not react.

When the tide turned and the water began to pull back, they came out. Wet, brisk, untroubled. Malva shook herself comprehensively. Indie retrieved the hedgehog from where it had been nudged by a curious fish and examined it for damage. None.

“We will need a different arrangement,” Indie said.

“The cave is still excellent,” Malva said. “We will come at low tide. As a visiting place.”

“An outpost,” Indie said.

“Exactly.”

This seemed reasonable to Freddie. His tail moved in a slow, easy arc. He walked with them along the beach. Three low dogs moving at the same pace. Along the waterline. Leaving prints in the wet sand.

Indie and Malva peeled off at the beach steps. Freddie continued to the cottage, pleasantly damp, the salt still on his coat.

His human had seen him coming and opened the door. The lamp was on inside. They looked at his dampness. No questions were asked. Freddie ate his supper. A towel appeared. He submitted to it briefly.

Freddie circled once, twice, three times. On the third he kept going. His body curled inward. His nose found his tail. Within thirty seconds he was warm.

Out at the headland, in the cave, the hedgehog sat. It waited for the next low tide. Patient in the dark.

Sleep well, Prince Freddie. In the headland cave, the tide is already rising. The rubber hedgehog is in very good hands.

The first star fell at exactly eight o’clock.

This star tumbled slowly through the purple sky. It spun and spiralled. It landed with a gentle plink in the shallow water.

He waded in and found a glowing, warm pebble the size of a grape, pulsing with silver light.

Then another fell. And another. Scattered along the shore, plink, plink, plink, landing in the shallows and on wet sand and between the rocks. Each one glowed where it lay.

Freddie threw back his head. He let out his most impressive howl. The one he saved for postal carriers. Within moments, help arrived. The Nielsen family’s dachshunds, Indie and Malva, appeared from the direction of the harbour, looking like a furry caterpillar in the starlight. The twins were Swedish and impeccably polite. They were Lowriders. Short-legged dogs who patrolled together.

“We have a situation,” Freddie said.

“We can see that,” Indie said.

“It is raining stars,” Malva said. “We will need a system.”

They formed a search line. Indie took the east. Malva took the west. Freddie took the centre. Stars were scattered along the beach. Some glowed. Others were buried in sand. Freddie dug seven from the nets. Malva found three behind the gelato shop. Indie found one in a tide pool.

Star by star, they gathered them to a flat rock. The glow built. The rock looked like a small second moon.

But one was missing.

Freddie could see it. At the church on the hill, on the weathervane, the North Star glowed. More brilliantly than all others. It was not lost. It was sitting.

He climbed the hill, his short legs working. The steps were steep. His crown tilted sideways twice. He corrected it with composure.

From the base of the tower, he looked up.

“Hello,” Freddie said.

The North Star glowed a little brighter. A small acknowledgement.

Freddie sat down on the cool stone and waited.

He sat for a while. The night was very still. From here he could see the beach below. The gathered stars on the rock. Indie and Malva’s shapes moving.

“It’s good down here,” Freddie said. “But there are people who need you up there. The astronomers keep very careful charts, with names and everything. They would send cross letters if even one star was missing. They look for you, and when they find you, they feel less lost.”

The North Star was quiet. Then it rose gently from the weathervane. It did not need carrying. It went back up slowly. With great dignity. It had made its own decision.

As it clicked back into place, the other stars followed. They lifted from the rock in a silver stream. Each one found its position. The sky filled. The beach went dark. The water caught the starlight.

Indie and Malva stood on the beach and watched. Freddie came down the hill and stood with them.

“Efficient,” Indie said.

“Very,” Malva agreed.

They walked home together, three low dogs on wet sand. Tia would later call them the Lowrider Club. Freddie found it accurate.

The cottage was warm ahead of him, its windows soft with light.

His human was already asleep. The bed was turned down. Freddie hopped up. He settled against his human’s side.

He circled once, twice, three times.

Then slowly, he lowered his chin to his paws. The bed’s warmth rose through his fur.

He let out a long, quiet breath.

Through the window, the North Star held its place. As it always had. As it always would.

Prince Freddie was doing his morning patrol when he saw something impossible.

A dog was running along the beach. Her paws barely touched the sand. She leaped over driftwood, clearing obstacles that would have taken Freddie three attempts to climb over.

Then she spotted him and changed direction, bounding over with such enthusiasm that Freddie instinctively braced himself.

She skidded to a stop in a spray of sand, her whole body wiggling with energy. She was lean and long-legged, with a coat the colour of midnight and honey.

“You’re Prince Freddie. I’ve been hoping to meet you. I’m Tia.” She spoke so quickly the words tumbled over each other. “I just moved past the lighthouse. I’ve been exploring. This beach is amazing. Are those hermit crabs. Do you want to play.”

Before Freddie could answer, Tia grabbed his tail. She tugged it gently and play-bowed.

“My tail is not a toy,” Freddie said, spinning to face her.

“Everything’s a toy if you’re creative enough.” Tia released his tail and bounded in a circle around him. “Race you to the rocks.”

She took off. Freddie ran after her, his short legs pumping hard against the sand. But Tia moved like liquid, like wind taking form. She reached the rocks in seconds, leaping up onto a boulder with the grace of a mountain goat.

“You’re fast,” Freddie said when he finally arrived, still catching his breath.

“My human says I’m part gazelle, part lightning bolt, part chaos,” Tia said proudly. Then her expression changed. “I’m also a bit too much, sometimes. At my old beach, the other dogs preferred shade and quiet. They liked long afternoons. I could never settle the way they did.”

“I don’t think you’re too much,” Freddie said.

Her tail wagged so hard her whole body shook. “Want to explore? I found a part of the coast I haven’t been to yet and it’s better with a friend.”

They went together. Tia led at a pace Freddie could manage. He could tell she was holding back. They went past the south rocks, past the fisherman’s spot, past the cove. Further than Freddie usually went.

The beach here was different. Wider, with shallow pools formed by rocks. Tia paused and sniffed the air. Salt hung heavy here, mixed with the mineral scent of exposed rock and the green smell of the tideline. Things lived in these pools: anemones the colour of plums. A starfish moving slowly. Small fish that turned in tight formation.

Tia stopped at every pool. She looked into each one. Her nose almost touched the water. She did not jump in. She did not splash.

“I didn’t know you could be still,” Freddie said.

“I can,” Tia said, not looking up. “I just don’t usually want to. But this is worth being still for.”

They moved along the pools for an hour. Tia found a crab and watched it. Freddie found a piece of sea glass the colour of fog. He carried it and set it on a rock where light would find it.

At some point they sat together on the warm sand between two larger rocks and looked out at the sea. Tia’s whole body still vibrated faintly with energy.

“This is the good kind of tired,” Tia said. “The kind where you did something and now you’re finished with it.”

“This coast is long,” Freddie said. “You’ll find the edges of it eventually. But there’s quite a lot to see before you get there.”

“Your tail is very tuggable, by the way,” Tia said. “Very dignified but also playful.”

They walked back together as the afternoon sun warmed the sand. Tia kept racing ahead and circling back, but she always returned to walk beside Freddie, occasionally giving his tail a gentle, friendly tug.

When they reached the spot where their paths home diverged, Tia touched her nose to Freddie’s.

“Tomorrow,” Tia said, “I want to show you the thing near the lighthouse. And there’s a cave I haven’t checked yet, and.” She stopped. “Too much.”

Freddie touched his nose to hers and said nothing.

Freddie walked home as the light went long and gold across the shore.

His human had made something that smelled rich and warm. After dinner, Freddie hopped onto the bed. The covers felt soft under his short legs.

Freddie circled once, twice, three times. His crown tilted with each motion. Then he dropped, nose into the warmth, tail finding his back paw. His human was there in the dark beside him. The hand moved down from his shoulders to his tail. His crown rested against the human’s warmth.

He let out one quiet, contented breath.

The wind moved through the beach grass outside, moving the way it always moved, without stopping, without resting.

Somewhere past the lighthouse, another dog curled up for the night. She was dreaming. Her paws moved slow, racing something only she could see. In her dream, she ran and ran, her legs eating up the distance, the sand endless, the world vast and hers to explore.

Sleep well, Prince Freddie. Somewhere, another dog dreams of running too.

He was always at the western end of the beach. On the flat rock where the coast bent toward the headland. Before tourists arrived and after they left. He came in grey light, before the colour was in the sky. He stayed through the morning. Freddie had never seen him catch anything.

The other fishermen came with boats and nets. This man came with a mended rod and a dented thermos.

One morning, Freddie stopped. He found himself sitting down on the sand beside the rock. The man looked at him the way people look at things they have half expected, and said nothing.
They sat together as the sun came up.

The man poured coffee from his thermos into the cap, which was also a cup, and held it in both hands. His hands were weathered. He watched the sea. It moved toward the shore and withdrew.

Freddie watched the line in the water. It barely moved.
After a while, the man said: “You have good manners for a corgi.”
Freddie’s tail moved once. He felt this was the appropriate response.

The man drank his coffee. He did not offer Freddie any, which Freddie respected. It was clearly not a sharing coffee. It was a being-somewhere coffee. There is a difference, and it matters.

A small fish broke the surface far out, briefly, and was gone.
There was a small battered tin vessel beside the thermos. Not the cap. A separate cup, sitting there on the rock.

“My friend Mateo sometimes rows over from the next cove,” the man said. “Brings coffee in a tin. We don’t arrange it. He comes when he comes.”
He looked at the sea.

“The light is good here,” he said. “He says the same.”
The light was low and golden, coming in at an angle that lit the water.

Freddie leaned slightly toward the man. Not all the way. Just slightly, the way you offer company without pressing it.
They sat through the morning. Other people appeared at the far end of the beach, grew larger as they approached, smaller as they passed, and were gone. A grey heron stood at the water’s edge, perfectly still. A boat leaving the harbour, its engine faint and purposeful. The coffee went cold in the cap. Neither of them minded.

Around mid-morning, something happened on the line. The man straightened and held it differently. A brief, modest struggle. He drew it in. There was a fish on the hook. He held it for a moment, looking at it without triumph. Then he lowered it back into the water. He held it there until it was swimming. Then he let it go.
He did not explain this. Freddie did not need him to

Later, as Freddie was leaving, the man said: “Hasta pronto.“ Simply, the way you offer something you fully expect to be there to offer.

Freddie had patrol duties and responsibilities and a great deal of coast to look after. He was also not entirely sure how next week worked, in the way that corgis sometimes are not.

But he turned back once. The man was watching the line again. Present. Not waiting for anything in particular. The surface of the sea all around him going gold.

Walking home along the shore, Freddie moved slowly. He was home before he expected. The cottage came into view. Its kitchen window was lit. A warm square of amber in the blue-grey morning. Someone was awake. Already in the kitchen. There before he arrived.

His human opened the door before he reached it.
Freddie ate breakfast with the solemnity appropriate to the morning. Then he went to the bed.

He circled once, twice, three times. On the third circle he sat down mid-turn. His chin dropped forward. The rest followed slowly. Like the tide following its own decision.

His human’s hand moved along his back. Quiet. Sure. Still.
His tail rested where it was.

Outside, the flat rock was empty. The man had gone home too. The sea moved as it always did. Toward shore. Withdrawing. Always the same.

Rest well, Prince Freddie. At the western end of the beach, the flat rock waits for tomorrow.

“Good morning,” Freddie said.

“There isn’t time,” Pedro said. He ruffled his wings in the way that meant he had been rehearsing this conversation since before dawn. “The parliament convenes at the top of the high cliff above the harbour at eleven. I have been summoned to account for the shiny-thing incident. Formally. With a vote.” He paused. “There may be a gavel.”

Freddie set down his bowl. “I thought that was resolved.”

“Resolved between me and the Pearl of Granada, yes. Resolved between me and the Coastal Seagull Parliament,” Pedro said, “apparently not. I have received a summons.” He produced a small piece of driftwood from under his wing. Something had been scratched into it in enthusiastic capital letters. “It arrived this morning. I am fairly certain Rodrigo wrote it. Rodrigo has always had it in for me.”

Freddie read the driftwood. The summons was long. It used the phrase in the matter of four times.

“I’ll come,” Freddie said.

Pedro’s feathers settled by approximately one degree. “I knew you would. You are a corgi of principle.” He looked at Freddie’s bowl. “Are you going to finish that?”

The cliff above the harbour was a proper climb. The path was narrow. The rock uneven underfoot. Freddie’s short legs worked for it. By the time they reached the top, his crown had tilted sideways. He corrected it with dignity. Pedro flew beside him at head height, offering directions and encouragement.

The parliament was already assembled. Eleven seagulls on a flat shelf of rock, arranged in a rough crescent. At the centre, a larger seagull with an unusually formal demeanour stood behind a piece of driftwood that was clearly serving as a lectern. Beside it, something smaller, the size of a fist. The gavel.

The parliament’s Presiding Officer was named Eugenio. He introduced himself as Presiding Officer three times in the first minute, which gave Freddie a reasonable sense of Eugenio.

“We are convened,” Eugenio said, and struck the gavel. “The matter of Pedro. The shiny-thing incident. There will be a vote.”

Pedro, beside Freddie, was very still.

“The individual known as Pedro may make his statement,” Eugenio said.

Pedro stepped forward. He drew himself up. He smoothed one wing with the other.

“Señoras y señores of the parliament,” he said, “I have prepared some remarks.”

The remarks ran to considerable length. They covered his childhood on the north rocks. His life as a collector. The night of the Pearl of Granada. The moment he understood one find had somewhere else to be. At one point he appeared to reach a conclusion and then continued. A seagull in the back row fell asleep.

At last, Pedro finished. He bowed.

Eugenio turned to Freddie. “The character witness may speak.”

Freddie stepped forward. He looked at Pedro. Then at the parliament.

“I’ve known Pedro for some time,” he said. “He collected many things. One of them was needed elsewhere. The Pearl of Granada. He returned it. He’s brought me fish. He warned me about a seal. He helped a fishing boat in trouble.”

Rodrigo made his noise again. “That’s very touching. But character is demonstrated over time, not in individual acts. How do we know the hoarding is really behind him? How do we know he won’t relapse? Trust is not a feeling. It’s a track record.”

“He’s right,” Freddie said.

Rodrigo blinked. This was clearly not the direction he had expected.

“Trust is a track record,” Freddie continued. “Pedro’s track record is good. But I understand why you want the parliament to ratify it. The parliament can’t make Pedro trustworthy by voting. He either is or he isn’t. You already know the answer. You’ve been watching him for months.” He looked at Rodrigo. “You’ve been watching him carefully. Has he taken anything that wasn’t his?”

A pause.

“No,” Rodrigo said, with some reluctance.

“Has he warned anyone about anything useful?”

A longer pause. “The seal on the south rocks,” Rodrigo said. “That was him.”

“Then the parliament already has its answer. The vote is just paperwork.”

There was a silence on the flat rock. One of the sleeping parliament members woke up, looked around, and went back to sleep.

Eugenio struck the gavel. “We will vote.”

The vote was nine to one in favour. Rodrigo abstained, which Freddie suspected was the closest he could get to voting yes while still maintaining his position.

Pedro, walking back down the headland beside Freddie afterward, was quiet for a while. Freddie glanced at him.

“Nine to one,” Pedro said.

“That’s a strong result.”

“Rodrigo abstained.”

“He didn’t vote against.”

Pedro considered this. “No,” he said. “He didn’t.” He was quiet. Then: “I thought my speech was rather good.”

“Parts of it were very good,” Freddie said.

“Which parts?”

“The first part,” Freddie said. “And the last part.”

Pedro opened his beak, closed it, and then made a sound that might, in another species, have been a laugh.

Freddie walked home as afternoon cooled. The cliff top, the stepped lane, the beach. Then the cottage.

The gate was open. Someone had been in the garden. The lavender had been cut back, neat and low. The smell was everywhere, sharp and clean.

His human was at the kitchen table and looked up when Freddie came in. Then they looked back at what they were doing.

After dinner, Freddie went to the bed. He stood for a moment. Just stood there. He circled once, twice, three times. His eyes closed. His legs bent. His chin met the covers. His weight settled.

His tail moved once, slow and content. Then stopped.

Beside him, his human had settled too. His human’s hand moved along his back. Then it was still.

Somewhere on the cliff above the harbour, seagulls dispersed. They carried the vote result across the coast, loudly, in several directions.

Rodrigo flew home to the north rocks. He told no one he had abstained.

Sleep well, Prince Freddie. On the north rocks, Rodrigo has not told anyone.

He had never been inside.

This evening, he walked the far patrol. The sand gave way to rock. The path climbed toward the headland. The door was open.

He went in.

The spiral stairs wound upward, narrow and worn. Freddie hopped up them two at a time. His crown tilted with each bounce. The stone smelled of salt and old whitewash. The air thinned and cooled as it climbed.

At the top, the lantern room was empty.

Not abandoned. The glass was clean. The mechanism was oiled and turning. A chair sat by the window. A jacket was folded over the back. A thermos sat on the ledge. Someone had been here recently.

Freddie sat in the chair’s shadow and looked out through the glass.

The whole coast spread beneath him. The harbour, the headland, the village above the beach with lit windows, dark water moving. He could see the cottage, warm at the end of its path. He could see the fountain square, the café, the lanes. He could see the flat rock, the cove, the morning beach.

The beam swept past. The glass went bright, dark, bright. Twelve seconds.

On the ledge beside the thermos, there was a notebook. Small, leather-bound, very full. Freddie nosed it open.

The handwriting was careful and old. Dates, going back years. Beside each date, a single line:

14 March. Clear. No traffic. Light steady.

15 March. Fog from 02:00. Two vessels. Both found the channel.

16 March. Wind from the south. One fishing boat late returning. Waited.

Page after page. Years of nights, recorded in the same steady hand. The entries were almost identical. Most nights, nothing happened. The light was steady. No traffic. The keeper watched, and recorded, and watched again.

Then, occasionally:

4 November. Storm. Cargo vessel lost bearing east of the headland. Light held. Vessel corrected. Entered harbour at 04:17.

And once, in a different ink, at the bottom of a page:

The light does not know which night it will be needed. This is why it comes on every night.

Freddie read this twice.

He sat for a long time in the lantern room. The beam turned above him. The coast spread out below. The notebook lay open on the ledge. Outside, the dark water moved. The light moved across it, steady and faithful.

On the far side of the tower, visible through the glass, a cluster of bottle caps and silver foil caught the beam as it passed. Pedro’s collection. Someone had gathered them very carefully and left them there, and nobody had disturbed them.

He left the notebook open. He went down the spiral stairs, one at a time, his crown tilting with each hop. At the bottom he stopped and looked up at the tower from outside, the beam sweeping its regular arc, the door still open behind him.

He would come back. On the full moon, he decided. He would come back and sit in that room and keep the record and watch the coast.

Freddie walked home along the beach. The lighthouse beam crossed the water behind him. It would light the cottage window every night. Steady. Faithful. Whether anyone needed it or not.

The cottage came into view. Lavender spilled into the night.

His human was still awake, a book open, the lamp beside the bed. Freddie hopped up carefully.

He circled once, twice, three times. Then he lowered himself into the warm hollow. His body settled slowly down.

His human’s hand moved once along his back. Then it was still.

He let out a long, slow breath.

Outside, the lighthouse kept watch. Twelve seconds. Twelve seconds. The light moved across the water. It reached for something unseen. The reaching was enough.

Sleep well, Prince Freddie. Twelve seconds. Twelve seconds. The light is still going.

Prince Freddie saw her from the cliff path on his way home. He stopped. She had moved her chair to the centre of the garden, which she never did. Her hands were folded in her lap. She was not doing anything except watching the far wall.

He put his front paws on the low gate and looked in.

“Señora Benilde?”

“Prince Freddie.” She didn’t turn around, but her voice was warm. “Come in, if you like. I have been hoping for company.”

He nosed the gate open. He picked his way along the narrow path. The garden smelled of warmth from the soil, of thyme, and something else.

He sat beside her chair and looked at the far wall.

It was covered in plants. The vertical garden she had tended for years. Herbs and succulents in narrow pockets, small trailing things. Near the top, in a deep crack in the limestone, there was a bud. Large, white, tightly furled. The size of a closed fist.

“Seven years,” Señora Benilde said, without him asking. “Seven years since the last one. My friend from the next village came and we sat up together and watched it open. She brought blankets and warm milk and we stayed until dawn.” She smiled at the memory. “I must tell her you are here tonight. She will be jealous.” She was quiet for a moment. “It only opens once. One night, and then it’s gone. The flower is finished by morning.”

Freddie sat beside her.

“What time?” he said.

“After midnight, usually. Sometimes closer to two.”

He settled more firmly. He was not going anywhere.

They kept watch together, the old woman and the corgi. The village went quiet around them. The last lights in the harbour went out one by one. Señora Benilde told him things. She had held stories a long time. About the garden when she was a girl, when her grandfather built the wall by hand. About the plants she had lost to bad winters. About the years she had spent learning every growing thing on this coast.

Freddie listened. His ears were soft. The faint waiting smell in the air was growing, almost imperceptibly, stronger.

Sometime after midnight, something caught his eye near the base of the wall. A small movement, slow and deliberate. A snail, making its way upward with the focused intensity of something that had been planning this for some time. It reached a flat stone and stopped, as if checking its position. Then pressed on, toward the bud.

Freddie glanced at Señora Benilde. She had seen it too.

“He has been on that wall for three weeks,” she said, with great serenity. “I have been watching him.”

Freddie watched the snail pick its way along the limestone. “He could have started later and still made it.”

“He didn’t know that,” Señora Benilde said. “Neither did I, frankly.” She folded her shawl a little tighter. “We have both been very committed.”

The snail arrived at the level of the bud and went still. Whether it knew what was coming or simply needed a rest was impossible to say. Either seemed reasonable.

The flower opened slowly. It had waited a very long time. The white petals unfurled one by one. The smell came with them. Something sweet and enormous and brief. It filled the walled garden completely. The scent of a single night’s worth of everything the plant had saved.

Freddie’s whiskers moved. He had never smelled anything quite like it. It was not a quiet smell. The smell of something that had decided, after seven years, that now was the time.

“Mira,” Señora Benilde said softly. Not to him. Not to anyone. Just the word, offered to the night.

They stayed until the flower was fully open, wide and white against the dark limestone, the petals slightly luminous in the starlight. The snail had not moved.

“Will you come back next time?” Freddie said, as he was leaving. “In seven years.”

She smiled at that. “I intend to,” she said. “Though one never knows. That is rather the point of waiting for something.” She tucked her shawl a little tighter. “The not knowing is part of the arrangement.”

Freddie walked home along the cliff path. The night was very still. Below him, the village square lay quiet.

His cottage was just ahead. He stopped for a moment at the gate without opening it.

The cottage was warm and quiet. He lifted the latch.

His human had left the bed turned down on his side.

Freddie stepped up. He circled once, twice, three times. Then he turned inward. His body curved and tightened slowly. His nose tucked toward his back paws. He gathered himself in, small and warm and complete.

His breathing slowed.

In the garden on the cliff wall, the flower was still open. White and enormous in the dark.

Prince Freddie found it during his morning patrol, stopped, and stood in front of it for a long moment. The towers were precise, the walls smooth, the moat a clean channel that filled with water when the waves came in. Sea glass had been pressed into the walls for windows. A driftwood drawbridge, sat at the entrance.

He was still looking at it when Horatio appeared.

The turtle was old and slow and came from the direction of the southern rocks. He stood beside the castle and looked at it.

“Prince Freddie,” Horatio said. “Good. You found it.”

“You built this?”

“I have been building them for a very long time,” Horatio said. “Every hundred years, on this stretch of coast, something happens.”

Freddie looked at the castle. “What will happen?”

“Stay,” Horatio said.

Freddie stayed.

They sat together through the afternoon. The shadow lengthened. The light turned everything briefly golden.

As the sun touched the horizon, the air shifted.

Freddie felt it before he saw it. The sand changed quality. It held the light differently. The towers began to glow from within. The sea glass windows caught a warmth from nowhere.

Small shapes appeared along the ramparts. Not quite people. Figures made of compressed sand, detailed and fine. They moved with careful slowness. A figure might have been a queen, with a crown of seaweed. Others stood beside her, smaller, attending.

The whole castle was alive and silent.

Freddie did not move. He barely breathed.

After a while, a group of the small figures came to the edge of the rampart nearest to him. They were solemn and careful. One of them held something out: a shell, no larger than a grain of rice, spiral, perfect.

He lowered his nose very slowly to the wall. The figure placed the shell on the flat of his nose and stepped back.

Freddie held very still.

The queen spoke. Her voice was the sound of sand shifting: barely there, but present.

“We are always sand,” she said. “But for one night, every hundred years, we get to remember we are also something else. Thank you for being here to see it.”

“What will happen at midnight?” Freddie said.

“We will go back to being the beach,” she said. “Which is also beautiful.”

The castle held until the moon was high. Then, slowly, the glow faded. The figures went still. The windows dimmed. The sand relaxed back into itself, grain by grain, until it was just a castle again, waiting for the tide.

Horatio was already moving, slowly, back toward the southern rocks.

Freddie walked home slowly. The shell medal rested against his chest.

The cottage was warm and quiet. His human was in bed, a page still turning.

Freddie climbed up with a quiet groan. He circled once, twice, three times. Then his back end went down first. His front followed. His nose found the covers.

His human’s hand moved across his back. Unhurried. Gentle.

One long, quiet breath.

Outside, the waves moved slowly. They smoothed the castle’s traces. They kept its secrets safe.

Sleep well, Prince Freddie. The tide is almost there.

He stopped. He looked up, then down at the water.

The moon was not in the sky.

His tail went still. He sniffed the salt air, turning his head slightly toward the far end of the beach.

Then he heard it. From behind the rocks at the cove end of the beach, the sound of something in the water. Not waves. Not a fish. Something breathing.

He trotted toward the rocks, his short legs moving fast over the firm wet sand, his crown catching the starlight as he went.

Behind the rocks, in a shallow cove hidden from the main beach, the sea glowed softly. Like a lamp turned very low. In the middle of that glow, floating on her back, was the moon.

She was the size of a person, made of old silver and patient light. Her hair spread around her in the water.

“Oh,” she said, without opening her eyes. “I wasn’t expecting company.”

“I wasn’t expecting to find the moon in a rock pool,” Freddie said. “But here we are.”

She opened one eye. “You’re very calm about this.”

“I’ve met a cloud who dropped every star in the sky into the sea,” Freddie said. “And a fish who listens to five hundred years of history. I try not to be too surprised by things.”

The moon closed her eye again. “I just needed to swim. One night. All that time up there, and I have never once been in it.” She moved one hand slowly through the water. “I had no idea it was this cold. Or this good.”

“Will anyone notice you’re gone?”

“That is the question,” she said. She said it the way people say something they have said to themselves too many times. “People need me. The tides. The navigation. The sleep cycles. I have responsibilities.”

Freddie sat on the rock above the cove and looked out to sea. Where the moon wasn’t, the water was dark. But where the cove glowed, the light was spreading outward from her, catching the crests of distant waves and returning them silver.

“Look at the water,” he said.

The moon lifted her head.

The sea reflected her light back up. Not in a flat, mirror way. The water broke her light into a thousand pieces. It scattered across the horizon. More light, perhaps, than if she had stayed in the sky.

“The sea’s been doing this all along,” Freddie said. “Every night. It multiplies you. It holds you and sends you out. It’s been doing your work for as long as there’s been a sea.”

The moon was quiet for a long moment. The water around her barely moved.

“And tonight,” Freddie continued, “while you’re in it, the sea is doing what it always does. Catching your light and sending it everywhere. You haven’t left. You’ve just come closer.”

She looked at the glowing water around her. Then she laughed, softly, a sound somewhere between a sigh and a bell. The cove brightened by one degree.

“Forty thousand years,” she said. “Never once did I ask what the sea felt.”

“I think the sea is glad of the company,” Freddie said. “I think it always has been.”

She swam for a while longer. He sat on the rock and kept watch. The tide came in small increments. A few stars drifted past overhead. Somewhere up the coast, a clock was ticking. The world was going about its business.

When she was ready, she rose from the water without any drama. No thunder, no ceremony. Just the quiet movement of someone who had got exactly what they came for.

“Gracias,” she said, and looked at him with her old, old eyes. “For sitting with me. For not making it strange.”

“Come back whenever you need to,” Freddie said. “The cove will be here.”

She smiled once. Then she rose and moved skyward. By the time Freddie reached the main beach, the silver road stretched across the water. It reached further up the shore than before.

He walked home along the tide line. The moon lit his path. He glanced up. There she was, back where she belonged. The sea caught and scattered her light everywhere.

The cottage came into view. His human had left the shutters open. Moonlight lay across the floor in a clean white rectangle.

Freddie stood in the doorway for a moment and let it fall over him. His sunkissed fur, turned silver.

His human was already asleep. Freddie hopped up carefully.

He circled once, twice, three times. Then he dropped onto his side with a long exhale. His legs folded beneath him. His nose found the warm place in the covers.

The moonlight lay across the bed.

He was in it.

His eyes closed.

Outside, the sea kept on reflecting the moon. Quietly. Faithfully. As it always had, and would, long after this particular night was done.

A suspicious crab near the fishing boats. Two seagulls who needed a stern talking-to. A volleyball that had no business being anywhere near his favourite napping spot by the harbour wall.

Now the sun was dropping behind the hills. The sky glowed deep orange at the horizon, fading to something softer above. Freddie was settling into his evening.

But tonight, something was different. The moon was full and very low, hanging just above the horizon, and the waves were whispering something he had not heard before.

“Psssst... Prince Freddie... psssst...”

Freddie’s ears perked up. Was the ocean calling his name? He trotted down to the shore, where the foam tickled his paws. There, riding on a wave, was the most peculiar creature he’d ever seen: a seahorse wearing a tiny captain’s hat.

“At last,” said the seahorse softly. “We’ve been looking everywhere for you, Your Highness. I’m Captain Coral, and we need your help. The Pearl of Granada has gone missing from the underwater castle. Without it, all the fish are forgetting how to dream.”

An underwater castle? Fish who dreamed?

“How can I help?” he said. “I’m excellent at finding things. Tennis balls. Dropped treats. That one sock my human had been searching the cottage for.”

Captain Coral explained that only a land-dweller with a pure heart and excellent sniffing abilities could track the pearl. It had been carried ashore. The most likely finders were: a flamenco-dancing crab, a seagull who collected things, or perhaps the mischievous wind itself.

He put his nose to the air and set off along the beach, reading it carefully as he went. His tail swayed. Past the fishing boats, past the café where they sometimes dropped bits of jamón, past the volleyball net. Then something made him stop. He followed his nose toward the old lighthouse.

There, in a nest of bottle caps and silver foil, sat a seagull named Pedro. And yes, there was the Pearl of Granada, glowing softly pink and blue.

“Pedro,” Freddie said kindly, “that pearl doesn’t belong here. The fish are going without their dreams tonight because of it.” He looked at the nest of bottle caps and foil. “It has somewhere it needs to be.”

Pedro’s eyes moved to the pearl, then away. Then back.
“What if you gave it back,” Freddie said, “and the ocean gave you something in its place? Something that was actually yours to keep.”

The seagull’s eyes brightened. That did sound rather nice.

Within minutes, Captain Coral had assembled a gift of the finest shells: spirals of purple, fans of pink, speckles of gold. Pedro carefully returned the pearl, quite pleased with himself.

As Captain Coral disappeared into the waves, he said: “Tonight, every fish will dream of you.”
Freddie trotted home. The tide was coming in behind him, smoothing his pawprints.

The cottage came into view, windows warm in the dark. Lavender from Señora Benilde’s garden spilled gently into the night.

He stood at the gate for a moment and breathed it in.

His human was already in bed, a small lamp left on. Freddie hopped up carefully. He felt the familiar warmth of the fabric beneath his paws.

He circled once, twice, three times.

Then he lowered himself down, slowly. His chest settled first against the warmth. His chin followed, then his full weight, releasing like a held breath.

His tail curled around toward his back paw and rested there.
His human’s hand moved slowly along his back.

Freddie let out a long, slow breath.
His eyes grew heavy. His breathing slowed.
